People in the comments must've never seen the series. He was doing that because he found a way to escape on a wagon and didn't want to be sent to another plantation because it would end his escape plan.

It's just a movie. Remember, all those black slaves never knew Africa. Even their grandparent came as children or teenagers because anyone above 30 couldn't possibly cross the Atlantic in such a brutal way. Those whose survived were brainwashed and subservient is all they knew.

Roots was landmark television and was ahead of its time. But in some respects certain elements of the series have not aged well. There isn't a network in the United States that has the guts to script a series that would show the real barbarity of slavery. It will never happen.
