As SpaceX continues to count down the hours until Starship Flight 13 (currently NET Thursday, July 16th, at 5:45 p.m. CDT / 22:45 UTC), Booster 20 left Mega Bay 1 for what will hopefully be its final time and made its way back to Launch Pad 2 as the... show more

NSF Starship Stakeout Stream: NSF Starship Launch Stream:

Flight 13 should go full orbital. Why repeat flight 12? We have to test full orbital return. We also have to test moving around in orbit using rcs to mate with something to test the kinds of things we need to do to refuel starships. If they can do suborbitally SpaceX should test that. Testing refueling and mating suborbital would be ideal because if an accident happens and things blow up or become irretrievably damaged so we don’t leave junk in orbit. It seems to me there is high risk in the refueling and mating operations. To get to the moon SpaceX has to demonstrate a lot more including actually going to the moon and landing as well as Artemis 3 and mating with Orion and SLS. I don’t see how repeating flight 12 advances anything. Of SpaceX went full orbital the boost stage would be identical and testing the booster which failed in 12 to return would still happen exactly the same. The difference would be going full orbital in 13 would put a lot more realistic stress on heat shield and test numerous other things. For instance if they go to orbit they could wait days or a week to return allowing tests of boil off and long term survival of ship. I’m excited about flight 13 but less than impressed by what SpaceX usually tries to do on every flight. Something seems wrong they are repeating flight 12.

GO Starship!

Final rollback is the quiet milestone — it means no more teardowns, no more fixes, the vehicle is what it is now. Everything from here is procedure. If the overnight lift holds schedule, do you expect a full wet dress before the window, or straight to launch ops?

Booster 20 rolling back to the pad after sunset for what's supposed to be the last time says the team is treating Thursday's 5:45pm CDT window as real. Worth watching if it holds this time.
