Following the completion of the first phase of corridor development in Addis Ababa, the transformation of the Kasanchis quarter is one of eight major areas currently being revitalised. Once a neglected part of central Addis Ababa, Kasanchis is being reimagined as an inclusive and accessible public space. The redevelopment features asphalt roads, pedestrian walkways, bike lanes, children’s playgrounds, sports facilities, public plazas and green parks, public restrooms, commercial shops, and car parking facilities. As Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed remarked, the Kasanchis redevelopment is designed to serve the public both functionally and equitably. In his words, “The transformation of Kasanchis, completed in a remarkably short time, lays a solid foundation for smart city development and embodies our vision for green, clean, and modern urban centres.” This video captures the inauguration of the Kasanchis corridor on April 22, 2025, in the presence of the Prime Minister, the First Lady, and senior government officials. #PMOEthiopia

What Activities Are Underway in Addis Ababa’s Second-Phase Corridor Development? • The second-phase corridor development of Addis Ababa is being implemented in eight areas • This phase covers 2,879 hectares of land, with 240 km of asphalt roads and 237 km of pedestrian walkways under construction. • Across the eight corridor development areas, 32 children’s parks, 79 public recreational spaces, 114 car parking centers, as well as taxi and bus terminals, are being built. •Among the transportation infrastructure projects, electric vehicle charging stations will be available in 58 locations. • More than 100 km of bike lanes are also under construction • Seventeen sports centers promoting a healthy lifestyle for city residents will be built and opened • As part of the corridor development, two riverside projects are being developed: one extending from Entoto–Kebena–Genfile Peacock and another from Entoto–Friendship–Peacock. #PMOEthiopia
