CBS News National Security Contributor Sam Vinograd says “every individual encountered at our borders is vetted,” but she believes the U.S. has “under-resourced” collecting foreign terrorism intelligence in other parts of the world, with gaps particularly in Central Asia. “So today, I am less concerned about an individual on our watch list somehow sneaking through our southern border than I am about a bad actor who is unknown to us.”

“We are facing the most complex threat environment in our nation’s history,” particularly from lone actors who are radicalized online, says former top DHS official and CBS News national security contributor Sam Vinograd. She tells Margaret Brennan law enforcement “need to rethink” what it takes to secure mass gatherings. “It can be true that law enforcement and intelligence professionals prepared exhaustively for last night,” she says. “But it can also be true that in this moment, in this security environment, the paradigms of the past may not be sufficient to meet the moment.”

"I am deeply concerned about the potential for retaliatory attacks here in the homeland by Iran," says CBS News national security contributor Samantha Vinograd.
