He qualified as a chartered accountant in 1985. He worked at Ghana Airways, Volta River Authority, Ananse Systems, and later became a partner in the accounting firm Asante Wiredu and Associates. Politically, he campaigned against the UNIGOV proposal in 1978, joined the New Patriotic Party in 1992, and was elected Member of Parliament for Asante Akim North in 1996. He served continuously from January 1997 until his death, winning with 72.3% of the votes. Tensions flared at the Asante Mampong Fire Service station when a woman stormed the premises, hurling curses at personnel whom she accused of causing her husband’s death following a recent accident involving a fire tender. According to reports, the accident occurred about a month ago during the funeral rites of the Asante Mamponghene. Fire officers were responding to a distress call when their vehicle was involved in a crash with a car carrying the woman and her husband. Although initial reports indicated that the husband did not sustain serious injuries at the scene, he reportedly died a few days later. The widow, blaming the fire officers for his death, visited the station in anger, invoking curses and demanding accountability.
