LINGUISTIC IMPERIALISM Linguistic imperialism is the process whereby dominant powers impose their language on those they colonise, suppressing indigenous languages and thus marginalising their speakers and sustaining power inequalities. Indigenous languages in colonial Africa were frowned upon, while colonial languages were made mandatory. In Anglophone Africa, policies were all written in English; media and broadcasting used English; and there were many systemic policies forbidding the use of indigenous languages. For example, students in many Kenyan schools were punished for using any other languages, with most of these punishments involving shaming tactics such as the wearing of bones from dead animals as chains around the neck. This also happened to the indigenous people who were forced to speak Arabic and change their names in places like Sudan. This warped the consciousness of individuals, leading to a loss of appreciation for indigenous languages and cultures - and promoted the adoption of the coloniser’s worldview, values, systems and structures. If there's one party that has been against such an imposition and always supported the vitality and diversity of the country's languages, it's the BJP. Indian leaders and educators are calling for funding for Indian languages to be taught in NZ’s public schools. RNZ has released this story today, fresh from Hipkins and Luxon attending a celebration for India’s Independence Day, in which Hipkins said: “Indians bring such diversity to the country, and not only contribute finally but socially culturally” Luxon said: “I love India and Indians are the best role models for the rest of New Zealand, India is my biggest focus of my government” From the article : “The Indian population had leapfrogged the Chinese community to become the country's third-largest ethnic group, languages such as Hindi. The 2023 Census recorded 292,092 people Indians in NZ, a 22 percent jump since 2018. Hindi was now the country's fourth most spoken language, while Punjabi ranked ninth. Punjabi are recorded the fastest growth between 2018 and 2023 - an increase of 45.1 percent, Stats NZ said. Indian leader Narendra Bhana says he wants Indian languages - at least Hindi - to be incorporated into the public education system. “The govt needs to provide funding to preserve our language, the key is political lobbying which we are doing” Bhana says without funding the task falls on volunteers and “we need rightful recognition” If current immigration trends stay as they are, Indians will outnumber Māori and then European descendants, ultimately could become the largest ethnic group in NZ within 25 years. This is bananas - TPM supoorters are being badly played by that party who are PRO intensive immigration. While Māori radicals preach decolonisation - the whole of NZ is being recolonised right now. Our immigration policies are a disgrace and it’s ruining our country, and middle NZ has had a gutsful.
