He had lost everything — his mother, his father, his three brothers — all taken in front of his eyes. He survived with his bowels torn open, his tiny arm crushed in pieces, still plastered, still healing. And yet, he was the one who healed me. Every time I sat on the hospital floor, tired, broken, trying not to cry, he would come to me with his little smile and say, ‘Don’t be sad, Aunty Nada. They’re in a happy place in heaven. Take a deep breath. Trust God’s plans.’ There were no psychologists, no therapists, no playrooms. But there was Kinan — a miracle of resilience, a child who carried more grace than the whole world’s experts combined. Despite all the pain, there are moments in Gaza that feel like miracles, irresistible moments of joy that you cannot find anywhere else. Kinan would not leave until he saw me laugh.
