Christopher Nolan on Robin Williams's creepy performance in "Insomnia" (2002): "Nolan: You wouldn't notice him sitting next to you on the bus. This is the simplest way to understand square roots… and somehow most of us were never taught it. Instead of just memorizing that the square root of 9 is 3 because “3 times 3 equals 9,” this guy shows it visually. He draws dots in the shape of a square and explains that the square root is simply the length of one side of that square. Why didn’t they teach it like this when we were in school? It makes so much more sense when you can actually see it. Would you have understood square roots better if they were taught this way?
