This police officer had to be the bearer of bad news to this retirement home. The township they live in passed a new ordinance on gambling. The new ordinance on gambling now considers Bingo to be a form of gambling, henceforth, no more gambling. 🤯 Let me tell you, retirement home folks take their Bingo seriously! These folks were not happy. I know my grandmother would have been pissed! 😤

As a man under 40, I feel bombarded by gambling ads. That is not an accident. Ontario legalized private online gambling in 2022, and in Doug Ford’s booze-and-bets economy, it has become a sad crutch. The result is everywhere: gambling spend has doubled, ad spending has nearly quintupled, 50+ private operators are competing for our attention, and during sports broadcasts, more than 20% of the time you’re watching, you’re looking at gambling branding. I don’t think gambling should be illegal. But we learned this lesson with smoking. A product can be legal without allowing companies to target people’s addictions for profit. So why are we letting gambling companies do it?

He said Stake and Kick share the same owner, making it look like the platform exists mainly to push gambling content to Gen Z through daily streamer segments. If you noticed every relevant streamer on Kick gambles for an hour a day as a pre requisite for their gambling deals.

Gambling companies are finding loopholes to entice vulnerable people back onto their platform - even when people have decided they want to stop gambling and self excluded on BetStop. This is what happens when you leave gaps that can be exploited by what is known to be a predatory industry. And it shows what will happen if the Government opts for a partial ban on gambling ads, rather than a full ban. The late Labor MP Peta Murphy and her committee report gave us the blueprint for change, it's time for the government to implement the Murphy Report recommendations in full. Online gambling has been deliberately and strategically marketed alongside sport, which has normalised it as a fun, harmless, and sociable activity that is part of a favourite pastime. Gambling advertising is grooming children and young people to gamble and encourages riskier behaviour. The torrent of advertising is inescapable. It is manipulating an impressionable and vulnerable audience to gamble online. Australia’s largest professional sporting codes and broadcast media were largely in lockstep with their advertising and sponsorship partners in the gambling industry during this inquiry to oppose further restrictions. The Committee shares the concerns of many witnesses and the community that the status quo is leading to a generation of young Australians who view gambling and sport as inextricably linked. This is concerning, not only because of the potential increase in Australians experiencing gambling harm, but also about changes to the culture of sport. Australia would be diminished if sport was to be so captured by gambling revenue that providing an opportunity for betting came to be seen as its primary purpose.
