A Uniform Civil Code, which is a Constitutional directive of state policy, does not mean that you require a Common Civil Code. In 2023, when the same debate was ignited by the NDA-BJP Govt, at the time the Govt itself said that STs and other ethnic groups in the northeast would be excluded from the purview of a Uniform Civil Code. So, under those circumstances, the diversity of India, the customary law which has led to the evolution of many customs and traditions over millenia which predates even common law cannot be subsumed in an overarching legal architecture which does not really protect and preserve this diversity. So, under those circumstances, this only creates tension and sectarianism in society and such action should be avoided."
