Speaking in the Steel Industry (Special Measures) Bill debate today, we should all focus on the requirement to save the jobs of those 3,500 people who have this threat hanging over them. China is pushing to shut down British steel industries, pushing forward to shut down the blast furnaces in the UK. Far too many countries like China have abused the rules of the free market, have subsidised their industries ridiculously, and have used slave labour to produce products. When that happens, the free market is dead. China now itself is suffering from an overproduction of steel. Their own housing industry has gone static on them, and they were one of the biggest users of the steel produced by China. Where is that steel going to go? It’s no surprise that a Chinese company Jingye is involved in this, because by pushing forward to shut down the blast furnaces in the UK, they know that we will have to buy slab steel from China. This is not a coincidence. This is all part of the plan. We must recognise that we will have to deal with those whom we trust and who do not break the rules. That means a whole rethink of the Government’s China policy. The previous Conservative Government should never have awarded it the contract, and I warned them about that. It is time for us to make sure that we deal with China at face value and do not accept the pretence that this company is private or in any way detached from its Government. That is a critical point. Cheap Chinese steel is a desperate problem for us, and we need to work with other countries in dealing with it. We also need to get our costs down. On Net Zero, I hope that the Secretary of State will tell the Secretary of State for Energy Security and Net Zero that we cannot go on like this. #BritishSteel

A hugely significant day in UK politics no matter where you are. The political landscape has been changing for quite some time and today map was redrawn. But people are united on one thing; change! Where does Northern Ireland fit into all of this? It's clearer than ever to me that while people are talking about Reform the party, we need Reform of Stormont. We don't know what the future holds, but one thing is certain, we need to guard against all eventualities and the last thing we want is to be without a devolved government. We need a robust system that can't collapse. We need to know that whoever is in Govt in Westminster, that we are in charge of our future. No one else can solve or care about our problems apart from us. Reform of Stormont has now just become an absolute essential. We must be able to govern ourselves no matter who is in No 10.

This is the first stage. We are now in a situation where it's 10 and 10 plus 20 for fentanyl, so 30% tariffs in the US of China goods coming in, and they can get rid of 20% of it if they solve the fentanyl problem. That they will do with certainty. But we’re not finished there and neither are millions of small entrepreneurs in America that I represent. We need IP law to be finally put into place so that our products and services are protected in their markets the way we protect theirs and ours. So, reciprocal playing field is where we need to go. This is a great first step but it's only the beginning. I want to sell to the Chinese people. I have no problem with them. I have a big problem with their government. They don't abide by the rules. We've known that for a long time and no admin has dealt with China, even after they came into the World Trade Organization in 2000. They've breached every covenant of that agreement so it's important for us to set the tone in terms of how we're going to go forward with China.

We're not necessarily focused on the crowd, the things like that. Obviously, we need it. We love it and we love our fans. But at the end of the day, we have to lock in on our task. We have to figure out our gameplan, just have a tight huddle. No matter what, it's loud. It's kind of the same no matter who the crowd is cheering for. It's loud. We have to be focused on the task at hand and just kind of have a short-term memory when it comes to things like that. But at the end of the day, we are home. This is the court that we practice on, we shootaround on and we're comfortable here. We just got to go out there and just perform."

Spoke to a well known gears manufacturer who told me that apparently Höfler, the German CNC giant which manufactures machines for gear teeth grinding has their order books full for the next 24 months! Most of those orders are going to China. This tells us that although China has huge numbers in manufacturing, precision machines are still largely sourced from Europe or Japan. They might not have nailed it yet but going by their speed of development in various sectors, they will eventually get there. Point is, we need to go down this path of development and manufacturing too. It’s a long, hard path to follow but it’s one that must be done. We cannot have the mindset that importing machines is the norm. Some of us will inevitably have to choose to go down this long and difficult road. Some of us will have to pull up our sleeves, get our hands dirty and build for the future to truly be self-reliant.

But I do feel that they've been responding. I think you're starting to see, hopefully, some of the impact of the work that we're doing in the background and also into next year's car. This is a car that I've had nothing to do with in terms of developing this car over the years. Hopefully, from next year, my input goes into that car, and that will be a car that I've hopefully been a part of or will have been a part of developing. But I think we've got a really great rapport. I think we're really progressing, particularly since the summer break. I think things have started to get better, and it's all just about building trust and communication. Also, I'm coming into a team that English is not the first language, and I don't speak Italian, so it's finding a common ground. And the fact is we all want to win. We're all here to achieve the same thing, and we've got to just keep pushing. So that's why I'm trying to keep everyone motivated on difficult weekends, trying to keep everyone lifted up.
