Astranis is so cracked. Started by two young guys and now launching telecom satellites into orbit and valued over $1B. Diana and I love this stuff, so when we got the chance to tour their satellite factory, we had to go.

It literally started in John and Ryan's apartment in SF. Yes, it turns out you can build a satellite in your apartment.

Then they upgraded to a "cleanish room", a make-shift clean room built out of PVC piping and shower curtains.

This is their operation today. This is the inside of a real, modern satellite factory.

And of course they have a lot of cool toys, like these shaker tables.

And these huge thermal vacuum chambers.

@sdianahu Wow amazing. To be honest, I always considered satellites to be basically floating sbcs with solar cells and antennas. Serious question: Could you turn a raspberry pi into a viable satellite, if not what would be the biggest challenge?

Anne Hathaway tells the story of dancing at a party before opening her eyes to see everyone recording her with their phones. Oh my gosh, I love this outfit. I had so much fun. This was such a fun night out in Paris. Adam and I were so lucky. We’re parents, we have two young kids, but we had a stolen weekend in Paris and got to go to the Valentino Couture show that Pierpaolo had invited us to. I got to go to their beautiful showroom, and this was waiting for me on a hanger. The tights were so beautiful. They were a little hard to stand in, but I didn’t care because I felt fierce. It was just a fantastic night. I think we all wound up on the dance floor, and Pierpaolo came over when we were talking. Then at a certain point he just goes, “I’m so sorry, I can’t be here. It’s not right. It’s not right that there’s a rope here. We should be out there. I’m going to go out there.” I was like, “Well, of course, you’re absolutely right, and I should be out there too.” So we went out there and we were dancing, and the song was so good and the vibe was so lovely that I just kind of closed my eyes and started dancing. When I looked up, I saw that like half of the dance floor had their phones out. I was like, “Well, hello.” Then I looked on my other side and I’m like, “Everyone’s filming this.” I’m just like, “Oh well, that’s life.” So I just kept dancing, and everybody kept dancing. We were dancing and filming, and it was lovely.

Astranis is building a new satellite for Taiwan. 🇹🇼 With our customer, Chunghwa Telecom, we will bring Taiwan its first-ever dedicated communications satellite. Chunghwa Telecom is the largest telco in Taiwan, with a market cap of more than $30 billion USD. Independent, secure internet infrastructure has never been more geopolitically important — and because it’s impossible to replicate with LEO constellations or even terrestrial links, it merits some spelling out. Astranis was founded on the belief that access to secure, reliable communications infrastructure is foundational to peace, prosperity, and self-determination. The satellite we’re bringing to Taiwan represents resilience. It will serve as a critical backbone for cellular connectivity, maritime communications, and essential government services across Taiwan. And it will ensure that Chunghwa Telecom’s network remains operational in times of crisis, whether in the face of natural disasters or other disruptions to terrestrial infrastructure. Importantly, Astranis provides more than just a satellite — we give our customers a standalone, dedicated network. A network that can be rapidly deployed and fully spans their geography of choice. With enterprise-grade security, customizability, and deep insights into the configuration and operation of the network. And as an independent piece of infrastructure, it safeguards against geopolitical risks, and is beyond the reach of hostile neighbors. Those are the benefits of having your own, dedicated satellite and network. And that’s why so many customers are choosing Astranis. We at Astranis are honored to be part of this moment, and to have a product that has proven so uniquely needed in today’s world. We look forward to continuing to support Taiwan and its people for many years to come.
