NEW DATA: Tents are down 60% in San Francisco. Our most recent tent count shows we've reached the lowest numbers of tents on our streets in years. The number of tents on our streets is down 60% since July of last year. This is thanks to the hard work of our city staff, expansion of shelter and housing, and clear enforcement of our laws when offers of shelter are rejected. In just the last year we've helped more than 5,200 people exit homelessness while sheltering nearly 10,000 people. Through rental assistance programs and other support we've helped 8,200 people from falling into homelessness. We've also seen a 30% increase in people seeking residential treatment programs. People are seeking help and we are providing it. We will continue to offer support and enforce our laws to bring people indoors and keep our neighborhoods clean, healthy and safe.

The sirens usually give us a 90 second warning before the rocket explodes. A public shelter is usually at least a five minute walk away. That’s why, nearly everyone in Israel who has a shelter in their house, has opened it up to their neighbors. Our neighbors on every side of our home, don’t have a shelter. We do. When the siren blares, the first thing my husband and I do, it has run outside to help our neighbors with babies get into our bomb shelter quickly. Everyone in Israel has been forced to ask this biblical question to themselves: ‘Am I my brother’s keeper?’ And we’ve all answered….’YES’

Pursued by terrorists, Gil Taasa rushed his sons Koren (12) and Shay (8) out of their home in Netiv Ha’Asara and into a nearby bomb shelter. One of the terrorists threw a grenade into the shelter, and Gil jumped on it to save his sons. Gil was killed, and Koren and Shay were both injured: Shay lost sight in one eye, and Koren lost hearing in his left ear. Separately, their 17-year-old brother, Or, was murdered at Zikim Beach that morning as well.

After a West Virginia shelter dog named Dawson escaped from his gated enclosure and then used his teeth to open the front door on Jan. 4, a search began. Dawson arrived at the shelter on Dec. 31 after he was picked up by animal control officers. They had received a call about an abandoned dog in a home, the shelter director said, but they ended up bringing two more — including Dawson — to the shelter. Dawson appeared to be taken care of and did not show signs of neglect. A few days into the search for Dawson, someone commented on the shelter’s Facebook page that the dog's name is Rufus and that he is home safe. “We’ve not had anything happen like that before,” said Courtney Proctor Cross, the shelter director. “That is one smart little dog.”

Abu Khalid was a key figure in the terrorist hierarchy, responsible for coordinating operations and logistics within the Sambisa axis. Items recovered during the operation included five AK-47 rifles, magazines, bicycles, assorted logistics and food items, as well as large quantities of medical supplies. No casualty was recorded among the troops. Clearance operations are ongoing across the Sambisa Forest, Mandara Mountains, Timbuktu Triangle and other terrorist hideouts in the North-East.

During the coldest days of the recent cold spell, patrol officers received a report of dogs left outside in freezing temperatures. Officers responded to the residence and located three dogs. They spoke with an elderly woman living in the home, who stated the dogs belonged to her son, who is currently incarcerated. The woman advised officers she was not physically able to care for the animals. Orange County Animal Services responded and safely took custody of the dogs. As a reminder, when temperatures reach dangerously low levels, please ensure pets have proper shelter and are not left outside in the cold.
