At first, I was angry about Danielle Smith’s referendum question. It felt like Alberta independence supporters were being denied the direct yes-or-no vote many of us wanted. But after cooling down, I started to see the strategy. If we cannot win a vote on whether Albertans should even have... a referendum, then we probably could not have won the direct independence vote anyway. This new question gives fence sitters a third option. People who are frustrated with Ottawa, equalization, pipelines, taxes, the economy, woke policies, and federal overreach, but who are not quite ready to vote yes on independence, can still vote to have the referendum. 🌹👋🇨🇦⚖️ : Danielle Smith says one judge appointed by Justin Trudeau shouldn't be able to eliminate the rights of 700,000 Albertans who signed on to have a referendum on independence. If Smith fights as hard for the referendum as she has against carbon taxes and for building pipelines, the referendum vote will never happen. Smith does warn the court ruling could dramatically change how Alberta is governed.

But the Sylvestre decision has changed the legal landscape and created a serious risk that an immediate up-or-down vote could be challenged before Albertans ever get a final say. The goal has not changed. Alberta still needs a clear vote on a clear question. What has changed is the route to get there. A two-step process may now be the most realistic way to protect the vote, build support, and give the independence movement time to organize properly. The fight is not over. It is becoming more serious.

At the Forever Canada rally in Red Deer, one of Thomas Lukaszuk’s people followed me through the crowd and said he was there to “protect” me. I wasn’t sure how to take that, so we joked about it a little. But then we talked about something serious. A few days earlier in Edmonton, a Forever Canada supporter attacked an Alberta independence supporter who was peacefully waving his flag on the side of the road. The man tried to rip the flag away and pushed him toward traffic. That could have ended very badly. We both agree that that kind of behavior is wrong, and the person responsible should be in jail. That matters. We can disagree about Alberta independence. We can debate equalization, immigration, pipelines, federal control, Ottawa, the constitution, and the future of this province. But political violence has no place in this debate. Peaceful Albertans have every right to wave a flag, support a referendum, ask questions, and advocate for Alberta independence without being assaulted or threatened. Indyref 2014 was rigged, most of it happened in plain sight. Sara Salyers of Salvo.Scot explains how. "In a consultative referendum, an opinion poll, there's no contract, there's no actual requirement, which David Cameron did point out, to abide by the results of that referendum. "So they did not then set it up in the way that a proper constitutional referendum would have been set up according to international standards to begin with. "The people who would be voting in that referendum would be people who had a stake in the future of the nation whose future they were voting on. "We had every boy and his dog able to vote. So people who hadn't been in Scotland for, you know, more than maybe a few months, basically, all these people had a vote on the future of Scotland as an independent nation, which is, if you just think about it, think how absurd that is, people with no stake. "Now, had that been serious, you know, a real referendum, that we were going to be allowed to have a chance of winning, they would have applied international standards, they would have used something like the new Caledonia franchise, which is a really solid. "And it doesn't exclude people who've moved into Scotland. It isn't just ethnic Scots, it's, you know, it's people who have a genuine stake, interest in the future of that nation. That franchise, it shouldn't be a council... local council franchise, it should be one that reflects the stakeholders, who are the real stakeholders, and that's what that needs to be. That it wasn't, should have told us everything. "Then we had the Edinburgh Agreement, and the Edinburgh Agreement said that there was a Purdah period, during which no new policies were to be announced. There was no... you know, all the campaigning would go on and then it stops. You can rehearse the arguments and everything that's been put forward, but nothing new should be introduced. "Well, we got 'The Vow', 'Devo Max', less than two days before the vote. 'If you vote No, you will get this'. Of course, that did not deliver, but it completely breached the Edinburgh Agreement. "Well, what the sad afterwards was, 'Well, there's no evidence that it altered people's minds. Of course it did. Of course it told people, 'Well, if you don't want to go all the way to independence, we could have,' I think Gordon Brown said, 'it would be almost a federal relationship,' you know, blah, blah, blah. "And that that meant people could say, 'Well, if we're afraid of what will happen, afraid of being pulled out of the European Union, we'd like a lot more power, but we were not sure about a total break...'. Well, of course, then they voted No. "Then you also had the media. And in a properly run referendum, according to international rules, you make sure it's 50-50, that people get both sides of the argument, absolutely equally. "There was a full study done, and it took one guy, Glasgow University lecturer in particular, to go through everything and come back and say, 'Look, it was over 70%, 'No' media coverage', and that also breaches international standards. "So we didn't have any possibility of a fair referendum. And that wasn't coincidental. And had there been any kind of vote tampering, say, with the postal vote, because it was only consultative and there was no actual, therefore fraud, it makes it nearly impossible to get a judicial review. "And there is no way, no matter what they have said, no matter what they have told us, 'Get a majority of members elected to Westminster' and that 'You don't need a referendum', or if 'Scotland wants to leave, then it has the right to do so'. 301,000 Albertans demand independence vote as massive petition haul delivered to Elections Alberta🗳️ Alberta's independence movement surges forward amid widespread dissatisfaction with Mark Carney's Liberal government. Today, I was the lone no vote on increasing the fuel revenue indexing tax. Several people talked about how they’ve generated one billion dollars in revenue from this tax. They’ve made that money off the backs of hard-working people in Clark County who are buying gas who have to get to work - they are paying a tax. That’s where the one billion dollars came from. Now they want to extend it for another ten years. But unlike in 2016 when it was passed on the ballot, now they want to do so without a vote of the people. Yes, we need roads and we need people put to work, but it should have been done the correct way — by a vote of the people.

ZANU PF has already invested millions in campaign funds, it has structures that are already campaigning in the villages for people to vote “Yes” while those opposed to the referendum are focused on court cases, talking about Chamisa, the beatings and unfair consultation process. What those who are opposing this process need to do is create structures to educate people about the Bill and upcoming referendum.

Treaty Chiefs in Alberta just asked the RCMP to criminally investigate Premier Danielle Smith for treason. Her crime? Calling a referendum. A perfectly legal & democratic act under provincial jurisdiction. Smith’s response was measured: “I’ve had my differences with the federal government, but I have never used language like that. This kind of overwrought language has no place in a democracy.” She’s right. You can disagree with the referendum. You can campaign against it. You can vote against it. But you cannot criminalize it. The Premier asked the chiefs to check themselves. She’s 100% right. This type of behaviour should not be accepted by the elected or unelected in Canada.

One of my main issues with separatism, both in Quebec and in Alberta, is that I view both provinces as part of my inheritance as a Canadian. Carving out either province fundamentally changes my country, and the only people who get a say on such a matter are registered voters currently living in that province. A brand new citizen who became eligible to vote only one day before a referendum would have the ability to vote on whether or not to change Canada forever. My ancestors settled in Alberta in the early 20th century before moving to Ontario. I asked Alberta independence activist Keith Wilson to respond to this concern. Listen to his response:
