Rare footage of Walt Disney voicing Mickey Mouse in 1940. November 1st 1940, Walt Disney released the short film "Mr. Mouse Takes A Trip". While it was nothing special at the time, it has since grown some historical significance, as Walt Disney himself was filmed recording his lines as Mickey Mouse for it, making it one of the only times he was shown doing his voice on camera. Alongside him is actor Billy Bletcher the voice of Pete.

Before Pirates of the Caribbean ever carried guests through burning towns and cannon fire, Walt Disney walked America through it on television. In 1965, on Walt Disney's Wonderful World of Color, Walt previewed the attraction while it was still unfinished, explaining how guests would travel through caves, treasure rooms, and a full pirate battle. At the time, this level of Audio-Animatronic movement and storytelling simply didn't exist anywhere else. This wasn't just a ride preview. It was Walt setting expectations for what themed entertainment was about to become.

For Walt Disney, Snow White was his biggest risk yet. He put all of his finances, both personal and corporate, into its success. If it had failed, it would have been the end of Disney. But it didn’t, and it made Disney what we know it to be today. However, the following three films, Pinocchio, Fantasia, and Bambi, failed at the box office, and Walt was broke once again. Walt was always risking it all in search for something greater. Sometimes finding success, sometimes finding failure, but never giving up.

I had the honor of interviewing Leslie Iwerks, the director of Disneyland Handcrafted, after an early screening of the film at Walt Disney World! My favorite takeaway: Disneyland was built in less than a year, and so was the film about the park’s creation — a full-circle moment. 🙌 Thank you to all of you who have supported me over the years, and to Disney Parks for the opportunity!
