What does it mean to be an American in the year 2026? It means we still believe in those ideals of 1776. It means that we believe that all men are created equal. It means that we believe our rights are given to us by God, not by our government. It means that we the people create a government that is accountable to us, rather than the other way around. It means that our elected representatives write the laws that bind us, not unelected bureaucrats. It means we believe in merit. That you are judged not on the color of your skin, but on the content of your character and your contributions. It means that we believe in the rule of law, so long as those laws are legitimately adopted. It means that you’re free to speak your mind, and practice your faith, without the government standing in your way.

I’ve had conversations with a lot of youth hockey coaches and program directors that are scared to coach their top players hard and cater to their parents for fear of them leaving the team and organization. At the end of the day, not holding your best players or their parents accountable is such a disservice to the kid. They aren’t learning valuable lessons about effort and accountability that are necessary traits to achieve higher levels in the sport.

COACHING HARD A lot of comments on recent videos asked what it means to coach players hard. I think the initial reaction to that we think of a Coach screaming and yelling. I don’t really consider that ‘Coaching Hard’. Coaching hard to me means you are fully invested in the player, want them to succeed, have had conversations with them about it, laid out the standards and expectations for them, then YOU HOLD THEM ACCOUNTABLE TO THAT. The coaching hard part takes different shapes and forms, it’s not always yelling… but the accountability and care has to be strict, that’s what makes it seem hard to the player

Bill Cowher says assistant coaches are more important than the head coach, and explains why he coached his coaches instead of his players: “There’s a lot more going on behind the scenes. Let’s be respectful of the fact that we don’t know everything. That’s the receiver’s fault.’ How do you know?” “You weren’t in that meeting room. The game is chess. It’s not checkers.” “We look at the head coaches, but let’s look at the assistant coaches. To me, those are more important. I didn’t coach the players as a head coach. I coached the coaches.” “I wanted them to have that relationship with the player, not just me. If intervention was needed, I would intervene. But let them do their thing.” “Let the coaches call their games. Let the coaches coach the individual players. You can see it from afar and coach the coaches. That’s how you give them a chance to become a head coach.”

We value forcing each player into knowing the situation and knowing what the unit must do to achieve success. We are conditioning our players so that their reactions are instinctive, and they can focus on their execution independent of the the situation because they have been in the stressful situation regularly in practice. Value of Situational Practice Periods - Allows coaches to telegraph the type of plays that could be run in a situation. - Allows players to understand the importance of the situation & the consequences associated with the situation. - Allows both players and coaches to be comfortable under pressure. - Another way to have the team compete in every segment of practice.

Everything and everyone matters when you’re pursuing greatness and trying to get the most out of players on a team. We are fortunate to have the coaching staff we have. The coaches put in 2-3x the work in preparation as players. I appreciate Coach Tim Walton putting the effort into these moments to create more connection with the young guys. These moments are why these young guys go out and go all out for him. There’s lots that goes into running a team. You need all coaches and players moving in the right direction. All coaches have different styles and techniques to create connection. It’s cool that this is one of them. Ohio State Football
