45 years ago... April 14, 1981...spacecraft with no engines glided down and touched down like a giant paper airplane on a dry lakebed in California. Space Shuttle Columbia on STS-1, the very first Shuttle mission, coming in hot over Rogers Dry Lake at Edwards Air Force Base. You see the chase planes, the perfect unpowered approach, wheels kissing Runway 23, and that massive dust cloud as it rolls out. Then the crew... John Young and Robert Crippen... stepping out after 54 hours and 36 orbits in space. This wasn’t just another rocket flight. Columbia proved the Shuttle could launch like a rocket, orbit like a spacecraft, and land like an airplane. Reusable hardware, real test pilots at the controls… it changed everything.The beginning of the Shuttle era in all its glory.

Ok, I did not know that the Space Shuttle Columbia used modified Lockheed SR-71 ejection seats for the commander and pilot in its early Approach/Landing Tests and STS-1 to STS-4. They were removed later as they couldn't fit bigger crews and proved useless during most of ascent👀

POV of the space shuttle pitch maneuver! I filmed this from Endeavour on STS-126. The RPM was standard safety procedure to expose the heat shield to ISS for inspection. My commander was gracious enough to let me put a camera on the window to get this, now one of few such videos!

Elon Musk thinks America’s space program stopped moving forward after the Moon landing. We went from landing humans on the Moon with Saturn V to a Space Shuttle that was limited to low Earth orbit, and eventually retired. Musk’s frustration is simple: we were supposed to be on the Moon and heading to Mars by now. Instead, he says, space exploration went backwards.

Once it dropped out of orbit, it became a heavy glider, relying only on gravity, aerodynamics, and the pilot's precision. There were no second chances. The shuttle had a steep descent, a narrow landing window, and just one shot at the runway.
