Atonement (2007) is devastating in its simplicity. One childish misreading, spoken with absolute certainty, and an entire life is erased. The film understands how cruelty doesn’t always come from malice, sometimes it comes from innocence.

Wild thing is the villain isn't her lie, it's the adults' eagerness to believe a neat story over a messy truth. Atonement nails how naive certainty plus institutional power wrecks lives more efficiently than actual evil ever could.

The Dunkirk beach sequence was filmed in a single unbroken five minute tracking shot. Wright designed it to feel overwhelming and indifferent, mirroring how history rolls on untouched while individual lives quietly collapse.

I have never hated a child this bad bro. I feel morally obliged not to, but I just can’t.

I read the book and found out the mother of Celia and Briony was upset at the father for paying Robbie’s tuition. The mother obv believed Briony and not Robbie b/c she wanted to… The family were snobs and would’ve prob cut off Celia if her and Robbie got engaged.

Dude. If she were innocent she would have thought "I'm just a kid and I know I don't understand anything about the world of adult sexuality so I won't make judgements about it." But instead she arrogantly insisted she was right and ruined entire lives with her arrogance.

My problem with the film is that the adults believe young Briony. She's like 5 years old. Why should they believe her? Her testimony, if true would destroy lives. Dont the adults know kids make up things? Yet,this child is believed. Physical evidence, should be required, like L&O

Her moves lead to a plot so heart-shattering, that makes it impossible to feel innocence in relation to this small snitch, case dismissed 👩‍⚖️

Not innocent at all. Ignorant and naïve maybe. But her actions were born of vindictiveness for a perceived romantic slight.

if what Briony did was due to her innocence, i'll be damned because i never hated a child so much after THAT scene. Sairose Ronan portrayed her role so well, i almost forgot there was an older actress who played Briony.

God this movie fucked me up

The first time I watched this was years ago and I kept the song Briony in my library to hold onto the film. Never rewatched bc the ending broke my heart, until 2 weeks ago! Five star movie.

It wasn't a misreading. She was jealous and jilted and made up a claim to hurt an imnocent man and woman. And given the girl's status, she knew she'd get away with it.

Briony didn’t do it out of ignorance or a misunderstanding. She knew exactly what she was doing & did it on purpose,driven by jealousy & trying to keep her sister away from the guy she had feelings for. She just didn’t realize that every cruel choice comes with a price.i hate her

The book itself is devastating to read. It is also a very hard read. It doesn't read effortlessly, like say, a Jane Austen. Joe Wright, simplified the archaic writing, and its one time, when the visual medium far surpasses the written word. Rest was taken care by Sairose Ronan.

My father had reduced lung capacity due to polio and a Harrington rod. He breathed very different than other people. He used to pat my back to put me to sleep when I was young. One time, close to sleep while he patted my back, I adopted his breathing pattern. 1/2

Except she was jealous of her sister and as we know from the wedding scene she also saw the rapist’s face but decided to testify against Robbie because she hated the fact that he didn’t return his feelings
