The drug is scopolamine (also called "Devil's Breath" or burandanga) - scammers use it sometimes a powder sometimes in an spray, while you are distracted looking down at a book or on the book, sometimes on a money note on the ground, wait for you to pick it up. Becareful.

If those books had something on them, the lady that was supposedly selling them would have had to touch the books herself. The account doesn't mention whether or not the woman was wearing gloves. We also don't know what happened in the store. She might have picked something up from the floor or somebody could have tampered with the bags. It could even been a bagger for all we know. It's best to be cautious with everything when you are alone. Even if you're not alone, it's still better to be cautious.

My adult sons have told me that you should not pick up money off the ground either because people will lace it with fentanyl and you can have serious consequences. Usually $100 bills on ground.

For the record you can request Narcan from a pharmacy. I know Walgreens has it available for anyone experiencing an overdose. Intentionally or not be safe rather than sorry. Also dont touch or accept anything from anyone. You have no idea if there is dark energy attached to said item.
