Céline Sciamma on why she made "Portrait of a Lady on Fire" (2019) & on Leonardo Di Caprio being a Lesbian icon: "Sciamma: What I had in mind above all was to make a film about love, with a totally invented story. And when I thought about it, I found that there were few films totally devoted to love, even though they are often the greatest in the history of cinema. It's rare, even though it's the beating heart of our cinephiles. Interviewer: What movies were you thinking of? Sciamma: 'Titanic' (1997), for example. It's a real influence, which I recently revisited. Both films are about the memories of a love affair, almost behind closed doors. I spent a long time looking for a framework and then one day I looked at the script and I thought: "F**k, it's Titanic! It's simply Titanic." There's the prologue, of course, before the flashback, but also the drawing scene, which is very explicit in my film. With this dialogue: "Don't laugh, be serious…" Interviewer Is it an important film for you? Sciamma: Collectively, it's important. There are different film regimes that count in our cinephilia: those we love and those that are part of a collective phenomenon. It's rare to experience those moments, especially when it's about 'Titanic' and not 'Qu’est-ce qu’on a fait au bon Dieu?' (2014). Titanic was a cultural moment, and in my life as a cinephile, it's probably the most important one, even more so because of the shared love. And with a real queer dynamic! Leo DiCaprio is a lesbian icon. A very new masculinity at the time, in cinema - with time it deepens enormously, it's exciting to watch. At the time, in that youth and in that body, there was really something hyper queer. And then the love scene is a total inversion of the conventions: she's on top of him, she reassures him, he’s the one who’s breathless... All that in the back seat of a car, like in any good teen movie. There were great subversive effects in 'Titanic', and that's something James Cameron always did anyway. What it also has in common with my film is the idea that the greatest loves are emancipatory and that the loss of them is the price of our future fulfillment. At the end of 'Titanic', there are three photos of a girl in pants riding a horse! It’s one of the few films that asserts that love can bring positive things, even when it's over. In my opinion, this is one of the hidden reasons for the incredible success of the film." ("CÉLINE SCIAMMA : DiCaprio est une icône lesbienne.", Axel Cadieux, Sofilm, 2020) P.S: On this day, 7 years ago, "Portrait of a Lady on Fire" (2019) premiered at the Cannes Film Festival, France.

Warren Buffett shares what he would do if he had to start investing again w/ just $1 million Here was his valuable/timeless advice: "With just a million dollars, you could earn 50% a year... I don't know what the equivalent of Moody's manuals or anything would be now, but I would try and know everything about everything small, and I would find [opportunities]. But you have to be in love with the subject. You can't just be in love with the money. You've really got to just find [the opportunity]. People find other things in other fields because they love looking for them. A biologist looks for something because they want to find something. I don't know how the human brain works that much. I don't think anybody understands too well how the human brain works. But there's different people that just find it exciting to expand their knowledge in a given area. I've had the luck of meeting a lot of people that are unbelievably smart in their own arena and do some unbelievably dumb things in other areas. So all I know is the human brain is complicated. But it does its best when you find out what your brain is really suited for, and then you just pound the heII out of it from that point. And that's what I would be doing if I had a small amount of money and I wanted to make 50% a year. But I also wanted to just play the game. And you can't do it if you don't find the game interesting, whether it's bridge or chess or in this case, finding securities that are undervalued."

Dire Straits - Romeo And Juliet A lovestruck Romeo sings the streets a serenade Laying everybody low with a love song that he made Finds a streetlight, steps out of the shade Says something like, "You and me babe, how about it?" Juliet says, "Hey, it's Romeo, you nearly gimme a heart attack" He's underneath the window She's singing, "Hey la, my boyfriend's back You shouldn't come around here singing up at people like that Anyway, what ya gonna do about it?" "Juliet, the dice was loaded from the start And I bet, when you exploded into my heart And I forget, I forget The movie song When you gonna realize it was just that the time was wrong? Juliet" Come up on different streets, they both were streets of shame Both dirty, both mean, yes and the dream was just the same And I dreamed your dream for you, and now your dream is real How can you look at me as I was just another one of your deals? Well you can fall for chains of silver, you can fall for chains of gold You can fall for pretty strangers and the promises they hold You promised me everything You promised me thick and thin, yeah Now you just say, "Oh Romeo, yeah, you know I used to have a scene with him" "Juliet, when we made love you used to cry You said I love you like the stars above, I'll love you 'til I die There's a place for us (You know the movie song) When you gonna realize it was just that the time was wrong? Juliet" "I can't do the talk like they talk on the TV And I can't do a love song like the way it's meant to be I can't do everything, but I'd do anything for you I can't do anything except be in love with you And all I do is miss you, and the way we used to be All I do is keep the beat and the bad company And all I do is kiss you through the bars of a rhyme Juliet, I'd do the stars with you any time" "Juliet, when we made love you used to cry You said I love you like the stars above, I'll love you 'til I die There's a place for us (You know the movie song) When you gonna realize it was just that the time was wrong? Juliet" And a lovestruck Romeo sings the streets a serenade Laying everybody low with a love song that he made Finds a convenient streetlight, steps out of the shade Says something like, "You and me babe, how about it?" "You and me babe, how about it?"

This scene from Louis CK's show captures something about love I haven't seen anywhere else: The only thing sadder than feeling pain in the midst of loss is not feeling anything at all, because a lack of emotion would mean you didn't have something worth cherishing in the first place. This particular exchange is about breakups but it applies to any form of loss: moving cities, losing a friend, changing jobs, etc. Here's the transcript: Old Man: So you took a chance on being happy, even though you knew that later on you would be sad. Louis: Yeah. Old Man: And now... you're sad. Louis: Yeah. Old Man: So... what's the problem? Louis: I'm too sad.... Look, I liked the feeling of being in love with her. I liked it. But now she's gone and I miss her and it sucks. And I didn't think it was going to be this bad, and I feel like, why even be happy if it's just going to lead to this, you know? It wasn't worth it. Old Man: You know, misery is wasted on the miserable. Louis: What? Old Man: You know, I'm not entirely sure what your name is, but you are a classic idiot. You think spending time with her, kissing her, having fun with her, you think that's what it was all about? That was love? Louis: Yeah. Old Man: THIS is love. Missing her, because she's gone. Wanting to die.... You're so lucky. You're like a walking poem. Would you rather be some kind of a fantasy? Some kind of a Disney ride? Is that what you want? Don't you see? This is the good part. This is what you've been digging for all this time. Now you finally have it in your hand, this sweet nugget of love, sweet, sad love, and you want to throw it away. You've got it all wrong. Louis: I thought this was the bad part. Old Man: No! The bad part is when you forget her, when you don't care about her, when you don't care about anything. The bad part is coming, so enjoy the heartbreak while you can, for God's sakes.

"One great detail will do the work of 50 crappy sentences." Wright Thompson is one of the last great magazine writers in America. He's long been a writer at ESPN, and if you love sports, you've almost definitely read his work. Maybe his profile of Tiger Woods. Or maybe the one about Michael Jordan. Some highlights: - "When somebody says something is overwritten, it really just means that the story is underreported." - Profiles are about figuring out what is a central complication of somebody's life and how, on a daily basis, they go about solving it. - "All of these stories, the few good ones I've written... I think these stories are like a prayer for empathy, to try to understand each other, to understand another human being a little bit at a time. Then slowly, thread by thread, you understand yourself." - On writing well: "One of the things that's missing is that nobody wants to hear what I have to say, which is just reps. Zen is a butt in a seat. There's no mystery. It's just reps." - "I wish someone had told me years ago that if you're going to be a professional writer for decades, writing is not going to be about words, but it's going to be about architecture. Only when you really understand how things fit together and move can you then actually be thinking about the words." - "All writing is trying to say something new that is true and is both specific and universal and that helps the reader understand something they didn't understand before, preferably about themselves." And here are the timestamps: 1:50 Writer's vomit vs. writer's block 8:33 The architecture of writing 11:30 What makes for a good story? 15:57 Bringing characters to life 21:11 "The hammer" 26:26 Writing a vivid scene 33:41 How to bring places to life 39:57 Dialogue vs. quotes 45:49 The role of secondary characters 51:44 The problem with "brainstorming" 1:02:13 What makes for a great ending? I've shared the full conversation with Wright Thompson below. If you'd rather watch on YouTube, or listen to the full thing on Apple / Spotify, check out the reply tweets.

John Badham on how he filmed this brilliant scene in "Stakeout" (1987) & what matters the most in a movie: "The challenge of making 'Stakeout' (1987) was to make a lot of divergent elements stay together. Trying to blend comedy and violence in a smooth, realistic way is very difficult. There's one part of the picture, for instance, where there's a tender love scene between Richard and the girl [Madeleine Stowe], then a horrible nightmare sequence, then a passionate s€xual interlude and then a farcical chase with Richard in drag - and all of it happens in less than five minutes. Pulling off something like that is a real test. The trick, which I think I mastered, is to accomplish it all without inflicting audience whiplash. To me, making movies that work in such a way that the people watching don't really feel your presence is what it's all about. So many directors want to show off the fact that they're using a mini-cam for this shot or a helicopter for that one. I don't think those things matter. If they don't help the story, who cares? I tell everyone who works for me, from the guy getting the coffee to the studio head, that all that matters is 'the picture that comes out. I'm always saying that, and the key is always the story. Whenever I'm stuck, I'll inevitably ask myself, 'What part of the story am I trying to advance here? How do I do it?' I'll work forever on these kinds of questions, and when I find the answers I'm pretty pleased." ("John Badham Just Don't Call Him an Auteur", Steve Oney, The NY Times, 1987)

Nobody's talking about the Claude trick that fixes every Seedance 2.0 video mistake. A cinematic action scene, an animated sequence, a product ad, and a dialogue scene are completely different types of content. Different camera language, different pacing, different reference logic. Most people try to force all of it through one universal prompt. The fix turns out to be simpler than expected: Claude Skills. It's not some secret hack. It's a file of instructions you load into Claude for one specific type of task. Once it's loaded, Claude stops acting like a general assistant and starts thinking like an expert in that one niche — with its own set of rules for that scene type. Here's what that looks like in practice: ▪ Cinematic skill — generates real camera language: dolly moves, crane shots, rack focus, shot discipline across multiple cuts. Test: a medieval battle between two armies, 15 seconds, dark fantasy. Result — three shots with the shot logic of an actual film, not just "epic battle" typed as text. ▪ Animation skill — locks in style and physics before a single shot is built. One test: a rain-soaked shonen fight in the style of Tokyo Revengers. Another: a quiet Ghibli-style farm scene. Same skill, completely different visual output — because the style gets fixed at the very top of the prompt. ▪ Product ad skill — keeps the product front and center in every shot: clean hero framing, commercial lighting, a full product description built from the reference image before any shots are generated. ▪ Dialogue skill — this is where most people fall apart. Lip sync, emotional direction, shot structure, and audio cues all have to work together. Test: an interrogation scene with a fourth-wall break — and the moment landed exactly as written, down to the pause and tone. The core idea is simple: instead of writing a prompt from scratch every time and hoping for the best, you build one skill per content type — and Claude asks the right setup questions (genre, tone, shot count, camera energy) before generating a fully structured Seedance 2.0 prompt. One prompt template for everything is exactly why 90% of AI videos look the same. This 13-minute video is free, and it's more useful than a $500 course.
