You can’t make anyone else change; all you can do is create the conditions where change is more likely to happen. I remember speaking with an administrator and hearing him complain that his staff wasn’t moving forward. Instead of commiserating with him at that moment, I said, “Maybe it’s you?” It caught him off guard, but there was a point. Too often, myself included, when we try to lead people to new ideas, and they don’t immediately embrace them, we blame them instead of looking at where we may be deficient. Sometimes, the new “approach” is sharing the ideas over again, only louder. That approach rarely works. In this week’s newsletter, I shared 3 things that have helped me rethink how to help create better conditions for others to embrace change. 1. Truly listen to their thoughts and viewpoints, and be open to the idea that your way might not be the best. 2. Recognize that you also had resistance to new ideas, including things that you might consistently do and believe today. Be open with your own story of resistance and what made you change. 3. Start by focusing on the areas in which others are excelling, as opposed to your perception of their deficits. People who feel valued are more likely to move forward. People who feel you are trying to “fix” them will fight you non-stop. You can only control your own actions. What do others see in you that will make them want to move forward, by your side? Fake Journalism Part 2 (AKA: Two Grown Adults Play ‘Anonymous Source’ With Burner Emails) Since I was recently reminded of the time that Jess once pretended to have a “source” for the Joe Flipperhead/Olivia audio… let’s finish the story. Because this accidentally cracked open a vault of stupidity that deserves daylight. To recap Part 1, I already exposed how "Journalism Jesus” made a fake Twitter profile of a random journalist just to dodge a copyright strike, a profile he literally forgot I watched him create when he started trying to slither back onto my page a couple weeks back. You can’t make this level of stupidity up. We also established that Jess spun a full investigative-fiction saga about: • talking to a source, • spending an entire day “authenticating” the audio, • verifying details, • receiving a whistleblower drop. Reality: It was Aidan. Just Aidan. No source. No reporting. Aidan told me he was the one who sent it to her, and I asked why he didn't intervene while Nurse_Kim was being blamed by Joe Flipperhead . His response? It'll die down. Who care. I can't be connected to proton emails right now. Kk. Just two chaotic people doing Dollar Tree journalism. And somehow… Part Two is even more embarrassing. Aidan wanted the full Karen recording leaked. Jess volunteered as tribute. When only the partial clips leaked, Aidan spiraled. They weren’t hearing the whole audio which he thought made him look better. (Spoiler alert- it doesn’t. Everyone knows he constantly fires people up prior to recording them while he remains calm). Suddenly Jess posts her dramatic tweet begging an “anonymous source” to send her the entire recording. Totally subtle, right? And shocker- minutes later she magically receives an email with a clip. Who sent it? Aidan. Again. The man is allergic to subtlety. And here’s the part Aidan REALLY doesn’t want you to know: I actually begged Aidan not to do this. The second I saw Jess’s “send me the whole thing” tweet, I knew EXACTLY what was happening, she was signaling him to leak the full recording through a fake source. I told him: “Delete it. Stop sharing it. Stop having it at all. Don’t do it. You can’t trust her.” He was out on bail, and I was worried he’d get himself in deeper trouble. I was also aware both of his lawyers begged him to not share it. He didn’t ultimately do it, but if it ends up in Jess’s paws, we know the real source. Let’s pause for this gem: Jess’s October 3 tweet. She claimed she only operates on “facts and receipts.” Girl… Your “facts” are Aidan’s tantrums. Your “receipts” are whatever file/text message/audio he shoves your way that he doesn’t want to dirty his own hands with. She’s not a journalist. She’s his intern assistant with no salary, no oversight, and no self awareness. She’ll post anything or do anything he’s too cowardly or too legally exposed to do himself, including calling people’s employers. Peak intellectual rigor. And now, the Proton forensic FAIL that broke the internet: Email to Joe Flipperhead: tbwireTAPkr Email to Jess: tbwireTAPPEDkr They really thought adding “ED” made it look like a second whistleblower. Throughout this journey, we developed a clear understanding of professional boundaries and mutual respect. I own and run a media platform that gives space to voices that may either criticise or praise you in equal measure. I have always appreciated the fact that you understood and respected this principle, and never sought to censor our work. In return, I have respected our friendship and never abused our proximity for personal or journalistic advantage. It is therefore deeply disheartening that, 48 hours after a defamatory article was published by Simba Chikanza on ZimEye falsely claiming that I recorded your conversation regarding Advocate Thabani Mpofu (Thabani Mpofu), you have chosen to remain silent and avoid setting the record straight. You are the only person who knows who was on the other side of that phone call. While you have every right to protect the identity of that individual, it is unfair to remain silent while false accusations are being levelled against a long-time friend and colleague. Unfortunately, your silence — as has happened in other matters which I will not get into here — creates a vacuum that people inevitably fill with assumptions and speculation. One cannot entirely blame those who may conclude that your silence suggests some level of complicity in the breeding of these claims. That naturally raises difficult questions about why you are prepared to protect that individual at the expense of long-standing friends and comrades. Luke narrated his painful experience in an open letter to Domboshava residents, circulated in polling-station-based WhatsApp groups in Domboshava, which we later published on the Nehanda Radio website in July 2023. One could conclude you have a perchant for sabotaging your own friends and comrades, even when they would not in any way have sought any benevolence from you. While your friends and comrades are left exposed, you appear comfortable briefing and confiding in a publisher whom many Zimbabweans consider deeply reckless and unstable. The day you eventually fall out with him, you may come to appreciate the importance of choosing and screening confidants carefully. Should he one day find himself before a court of law (given the many people he has defamed) he may be required to substantiate his allegations and there is every chance he will seek to protect himself by pointing in your direction. You have been warned repeatedly by many people about his conduct and disposition, yet it increasingly appears that you may have found utility in that recklessness because it can easily be weaponised politically against both friends and perceived opponents alike. I could easily have used this letter in anger to retaliate or reveal matters shared in confidence, but I have deliberately chosen not to do so because I still believe in conducting myself professionally and responsibly for the greater good. In 31 years, our phone calls must number in the thousands, and not a single one has ever been recorded by me — something you know better than anyone else. If you ultimately choose not to correct the record, so be it. I am more than capable of defending myself publicly and politically. Introducing the Content Machine! This was the first time I walked through the mechanics of our anti-slop content system & how we drive 10,000,000+ impressions at tenex with a marketing team of...2. A directory of daisy-chained skills that turn what you already say into publish-ready content. This is the key way to avoid turning into a slop cannon. It mines the places you already talk (Slack, Notion, Gmail, Linear, GitHub) plus what the internet is saying, finds the ideas worth writing, interviews you to extract the story, drafts it, and edits it to a 9/10 bar before you post. What are the principles of this system? 1) It is not a "write me a post" prompt. The core belief baked into it: the raw material must come from you. 2) The machine never invents your voice and never fabricates your insight. It does the research, the structure, and the editing, so your time goes only to the part only you can do. It focuses the human on the first & final mile of the content process. How is it structured? A two-layer split between the process & the person - The process layer is generic and shared: the pipeline, the content-type specs, the copywriting references, the onboarding flow. That is what lives in git and what gets shipped to other people. - The personal layer is yours and never leaves your machine: content-machine.config.md, creators/ / (profile, style guide, lessons), projects/, published/, oracle-reports/. All gitignored, and the desktop build script refuses to package any of it. What is the 10-step pipeline? 1) Creator Select. Multi-creator by design. It figures out who this run is for and loads their profile, style guide, and content lessons. Everything downstream is scoped to that person. - Onboarding (first run only). Scaffolds the workspace, auto-creates your Notion Vault, connects your sources, and builds your voice guide one of three ways: import a guide you already have, feed it writing samples, or sit for a short voice interview. 2) The Oracle. Two idea engines running in parallel: - Oracle scans what you wrote in the last 7 days across Slack, Notion, Gmail, Linear, and Git, hunting for "spikes," moments where you naturally said something worth expanding. - The Internet Reader scans what the world is saying, pulled only from the source list in your profile (handles, labs, outlets, keyword watchlist), plus a social sweep across Reddit, X, YouTube, Hacker News, and more (thanks /last30days & Matt Van Horn). - Every idea is scored 0 to 10 (POV strength 25%, story potential 25%, emotional intensity 20%, lesson/framework 20%, depth 10%). Six interviewer personas (Ferriss, Rogan, Larry King, Stern, Barbaro, Barbara Walters) ask you one question at a time, each chasing a different dimension: tactics, story, core truth, the hidden thing, clarity, emotional depth. It pushes back on vague answers and will not advance until it has 2 to 3 specific stories with real details. 4) Production. Your interview becomes a raw markdown file: stories, core insights, quotable moments, the emotional anchor, surprising reveals, the "so what." Your exact words are preserved. This file is the source of truth for everything that follows. 5) Refinement. Now it drafts, and only now. Each gives what's working, what needs work, a fix, and a score. 7) Revision Loop. Under 9/10 goes back around. The smart part: fixes get sorted into editorial (the machine rewrites it itself) and information gaps (only you have the answer), and information gaps route back to the Interview Panel with targeted questions rather than letting the machine make something up. Max 3 editorial cycles. At 9/10 the piece becomes the anchor. 8) Repurposing Engine. One anchor fans out into 10+ derivatives: X article, LinkedIn article, short X posts, short LinkedIn posts, a playbook if there is a framework in it. Each one is written native to its platform with a fresh hook, not cross-posted, and each runs the full council and revision loop to 9/10 on its own. This is the multiplier. 9) Distribution (optional, off by default). UTM tagging, a scheduled publishing queue, CRM capture of every touchpoint, attribution reporting back to pipeline, and marking the Vault row as Published. 10) The Learning Loop, always running. After you approve a piece it diffs your first draft against the final, extracts the pattern, and asks you to confirm it. Confirmed lessons go into content-lessons.md and override the style guide. Abode is live. A while ago I started exploring social with the mindset of creating something fun. I ended up creating something deeply meaningful for myself. When I started Abode it was out of frustration. How have we moved to a state of social that cares more about how you’re perceived than connection. Growing up from when social was all about connection I often became frustrated that group chats are all that remain for that space. Don’t get me wrong it’s not all bad. A lot of great things have come out of this era of social. I just always wished for more than a chat for my close friends and family. I wanted to create a space that felt as unique as each of my friendship groups. One that wasn’t restricted to a chat thread or functionality, I always felt that chat was this weird state of social where you’re waiting on a response, it didn’t allow for some of the best moments which are often spontaneous. Chats felt like more of a chore to keep up with, than something I wanted to be part of. The result of this was Abode. a hyper personal, create your own social, blank canvas. it allows you to add unique functionality through the form of widgets (which we call magnets). This allows you to have a unique experience depending on how you build your space. More games? More organisation? More social? The beauty of this is it’s up to you. This resulted in what I’ve ended up calling social through presence vs social through action. I’d be playing a real life game with a friend and update our score note in the Abode and other friends jump in and congratulate on the win. No message was needed, no context was given. Social just happened. I’ve seen friends who wouldn’t normally go out of their way to message each other play gruelling games of connect4 with each other because they saw someone was online and playing. It’s this idea of someone else’s presence triggering a natural hangout that’s low pressure. Not someone messaging, asking if you’re around and waiting for a response. It’s a blend between async and real time that just works. Right now it’s very fresh, we have a very limited number of widgets as we experiment with the concept and figure out what works. The idea is to open up our widget engine to allow other people’s creativity to shine and build as part of the abode ecosystem. - group space - live widgets - themes - real time audio chat - messaging - AI powered summaries for easy catch up - Automatic memory building Not all of these features may stay but I wanted to build a space that supported all you’d need and work backwards by using the popularity of features to decide a direction that best suited the majority. This resulted in what I’ve ended up calling social through presence vs social through action. I’d be playing a real life game with a friend and update our score note in the Abode and other friends jump in and congratulate on the win. No message was needed, no context was given. Social just happened. I’ve seen friends who wouldn’t normally go out of their way to message each other play gruelling games of connect4 with each other because they saw someone was online and playing. It’s this idea of someone else’s presence triggering a natural hangout that’s low pressure. Not someone messaging, asking if you’re around and waiting for a response. It’s a blend between async and real time that just works. Right now it’s very fresh, we have a very limited number of widgets as we experiment with the concept and figure out what works. In Washington, "fantastic" means the other side named the number and the market already priced in your failure. I should note: in 2017, the President announced $250 billion in deals during his first China trip. 300 aircraft. An $84 billion shale gas investment in West Virginia from China Energy Investment Corporation. I can tell you the exact amount of that investment that materialized. Zero. The shale facility was never built. The 2017 Boeing order was renegotiated twice and partially canceled during the trade war the President started 8 months later. There is a binder in my office labeled "2017 OUTCOMES: DO NOT REFERENCE." It is 3 inches thick. It has not been opened in 4 years. We do not reference it because the outcomes are the reference. The agricultural package was what we call a "scaffolding commitment." Billions in purchases over 3 years, structured so the announcement is front-loaded and the verification is someone else's administration. U.S. Trade Representative Greer said "double-digit billions." Beijing's Commerce Ministry issued a statement about "deepening cooperation in agricultural trade." Those are not the same sentence. By design. My deputy maintains a glossary of every term we have invented for agreements that are not agreements. It is 41 pages. He updates it after each summit. Last quarter he added "scaffolding commitment," "streamlined licensing framework," and "mutual recognition of shared concerns." He is in line for a promotion. NVIDIA was the quiet win. H200 chips approved for approximately 10 Chinese companies. We don't say "approved." We say "under a streamlined licensing framework." The chips ship. The export controls remain "in effect." The framework is the loophole wearing a lanyard. The controls exist because these chips in Chinese hands threaten American national security. The chips are shipping to Chinese hands. The controls remain in effect. Both of these are true. Fentanyl was discussed for 9 minutes. Both sides agreed it was a problem. Both sides agreed to continue discussing it. We added it to the deliverables matrix under "ongoing mutual engagement." The previous version of the matrix also listed it under "ongoing mutual engagement." That was in 2023. I copied the line item from the 2023 matrix into the 2026 version. Changed the date. The language was identical. But Taiwan. Taiwan was the deliverable we didn't put on the matrix. I watched the Taiwan exchange from the overflow room on a 12-second delay. I had the contingency statement drafted in 3 versions: "productive exchange," "frank discussion," and "both sides reaffirmed their respective positions." I used none of them. There was no contingency for silence. Chairman Xi released his remarks before the meeting was over. While the President was still seated across the table, Chinese state media published the transcript. "Clashes and even conflicts." His bluntest language on Taiwan in the history of the relationship, released to 1.4 billion people while we were still pouring tea. We called this "sequencing." The President was asked whether he would defend Taiwan if China attacked. He chose not to answer. We wrote that down as "a strong listen." The $14 billion arms sale. Already approved by Congress. The largest in the history of the Taiwan Relations Act. Taiwan's parliament spent months appropriating the $25 billion to proceed with this package and the $11 billion tranche approved last year. They finally secured the funding this month. The President told Fox News it was "a very good negotiating chip." He used the word "chip." Referring to the defense of 24 million people. Taiwan's Ministry of National Defense sent our office a letter requesting clarity on the delivery timeline. 3 pages. It referenced specific weapons systems by name: F-16V Block 70 fighters, HIMARS launchers, Harpoon coastal defense missiles. The letter was addressed to me. I filed it under "pending." On Air Force One, a reporter asked about the 1982 Six Assurances, the framework in which the United States committed not to consult with Beijing before selling arms to Taiwan. The President said: "What am I going to do, say I don't want to talk to you about it because I have an agreement wrote in 1982? The bipartisan action was press quotes. No vote. No resolution. No hearing scheduled. 4 members of Congress from both parties said the right words to reporters and then went to lunch. That's how the system processes alarm. I monitor 14 accounts we classify as "aligned messaging amplifiers." Within 4 hours of the Taiwan exchange, 9 went silent. 2 pivoted to fentanyl. 1 posted 3 words: "Not like this." It received 280,000 impressions in 90 minutes. He deleted it and posted about the border instead. The President patted Chairman Xi on the back 7 times during the Zhongnanhai garden walk. We counted. Micron. Cargill. GE Aerospace. Musk and Huang rode on Air Force One. The others flew commercial. Tesla's Shanghai factory produces approximately half of the company's vehicles worldwide. Musk's presence on Air Force One was noted by my counterintelligence liaison. No further action was taken. We organized the state banquet seating chart by net worth. I am told this was the President's suggestion. They came for market access. Xi told them China would "open further to American business." That was the deliverable. Those 5 words. No specifics. No timeline. No sectors named. 15 chief executives flew to Beijing and received a sentence. Chairman Xi has delivered this sentence at every summit I have staffed. That's what my team collected from the CEOs after the garden tour. Standard protocol. The badges were embossed with the Great Hall of the People seal. If you watch this ~50 minute screen recording closely (yeah, I know, it's long; there are also some times when my computer was very slow and laggy, just skip past that part. And at one point I had to run and get my 9-month-old a new bottle and left it on a boring screen, sorry!), I believe you can see real signs of the kind of runaway, recursive AI self-improvement that people have been warning of for a while (Mr. Kurzweil most notably and prophetically). Why do I say that? What's different now? Well, there's a reason my set of agent coding tooling is called the Flywheel. These tools all mutually self-reinforce each other. And they all flow directly into my ntm tool (short for "named_tmux_manager"), which acts as a sort of integration point and nerve center for the tools (this is becoming more true by the minute as I'm now seriously working on ntm). Now, ntm was something I started making to automate some aspects of my workflow, but it was the kind of thing where, until it was perfect, it sort of just slowed me down. So I didn't actually use it even though I kept working on it and trying to improve it, and suggested to users that they try it in my tutorials. Well anyway, I finally got around to "dogfooding" ntm last night, and now it's going to get very dramatically better at an alarming rate. Some of that is from applying my "idea wizard" prompt to generate more useful features and building that stuff out and addressing obvious pain points I encountered during my newfound usage of the tool. But a lot comes from my realization that, once again, ntm's true utility is not as a tool for ME, but for an agent. That is, ntm lets one instance of Claude Code or Codex act as, well, me, do the things that I had been doing manually. Do I wish I had started using ntm earlier? No, for two big reasons: 1) Doing it manually helped me build up my intuition massively, which directly led me down the path of creating useful prompt strategies and workflows; these often began as ad-hoc prompts that I realized could be generalized and made more versatile/universal. Lesson: don't prematurely automate until you have an intimate, intuitive feel for your "core value-add loop." Otherwise you'll have a fully automated system quickly that efficiently and automatically does a stupid or otherwise sub-optimal thing. 2) My eyes have been opened to the beauty and power of Skills. I'm not talking about your garden-variety skills that are just a simple markdown file. I'm talking about true tour-de-force directories of perfectly structured and organized files that are filled with good information, insights, workflows, etc., but presented in a way that is highly optimized for consumption by AI agents, with extreme attention paid to things like perfect progressive disclosure, token density, agent-ergonomics, agent-intuitiveness, etc. And also Skills that go way beyond markdown files, with full integration into Claude Code where it makes sense via hooks, sub-agents, and even Python scripts. These kinds of skills are a qualitative difference in expressive power and usefulness and a total game changer. They are also effectively composable, creating almost an algebra of skills that let you use them together in powerful ways. I'm working on a subscription service website and CLI tool now to share what I've learned here most effectively, stay tuned for that in the coming days. Anyway, I now know what to make and how to make it. So, getting back to that screen recording, what does it show that makes me claim recursive self-improvement is here? If you keep your eye on the upper left tmux pane, that's the "controller" agent. It is using ntm to control all the other panes which are also running Claude Code (but ntm fully supports other agent types like Codex and Gemini-CLI, and it's trivially easy to mix and match them if you wanted to have, say, 8 CCs and 6 Codexes for writing the code and 3 Gemini-CLIs for reviewing code.) Now, there's nothing that crazy about this much so far. But where it starts to get very cool is that as the session continues and we encounter real-world problems, things like my ridiculously overloaded computer that keeps hanging for long periods, Claude Code instances that crash and get into a frozen, unresponsive state, it can learn from that. And you can see it using my skill writing skill to refine its ntm vibe coding skill in real time. And then take that skill and refine it to be more intuitive for itself. Or use my cass tool skill to search all the session histories to look for problems that came up and strategize how to solve them. The most useful part was when, towards the end of the session, I told it to reflect on all the things we had done and problems we encountered. One way it can usefully leverage those reflections is by improving its ntm vibe coding skill to make it cover more edge cases and exigencies. But the other, more fundamental, way is for it to conceive of and design the optimal new features and functionality for ntm itself so that the tool embodies those lessons in a first-class way. This offloads cognition from its brain onto its tooling, just like how a person can lean on spellcheck or a calculator. It codifies correct, effective reasoning at the tool level, where it's more reliable and robust and repeatable. And btw, did you notice what code base it was working on the whole time? It was none other than ntm itself! So as it worked on its own tool, it had reflections and ideas about how to further improve the tool. Now, it could have just as easily gotten those insights and ideas while using ntm to work on a different project, but the fact that it was working on itself is almost gloriously meta and recursive. So by the end, after learning from tending to a big group of agent workers (btw, I have previously emphasized doing everything in a really distributed/decentralized way, where each fungible agent gets identical marching orders that tell it to use my bv tool to find the optimal bead to work on. This does work very well, but occasionally results in some contention and overlap from thundering herd, or at least wastes time/tokens/communication in avoiding that before the agents waste time duplicating work. But in this new ntm-oriented workflow, I was able to have the controller agent in the upper left use bv itself and then optimally parcel out the instructions to each agent so that we could know for sure that there's no overlap), I ended up with a ton of new beads for new features, which I had it optimize and polish a few times. Now I can swap to a new Claude Max account and have the swarm implement all those new features! It should only take a couple passes like the one shown in the screen recording to get everything implemented. Then we can rinse and repeat, having the agent read through the full session histories of each agent and its experience from its own session in sending ntm commands and seeing how they worked out in practice, to come up with the next batch of changes to both its ntm vibe coding skill AND to the ntm tool itself. Do you see how rapidly this turns into Skynet? My mistake earlier was in focusing on making myself a "faster horse" as Henry Ford used to joke about customers wanting before he showed them what they should really want (a Model T). That is, something that would make my experience nicer while doing this agent swarm based development workflow. But the obvious lesson is that you should make all your tooling agent-first because the agents are just better at this stuff. You can still watch, and of course I did add a ridiculous number of very nice human-centric features to ntm that you'll be seeing in the next day or two, but those are really kind of "for fun" to make us humans feel better about the process. All the real value-add is happening "by agents, for agents." PS: Towards the end, you can see me switch to my Mac and tell Claude to improve the skill that I made earlier today for taking the mkv screen recording files from OBS Studio and muxing them into MP4 files for sharing, while downloading songs from YouTube to serve as the background music. I made it so it can also grab the thumbnails and generate little song credit cards that show up in the lower right corner. This worked perfectly the first time! I'll include some screenshots in a response post showing how that worked, but it was awesome to witness. Skills are POWERFUL. So by the end, after learning from tending to a big group of agent workers (btw, I have previously emphasized doing everything in a really distributed/decentralized way, where each fungible agent gets identical marching orders that tell it to use my bv tool to find the optimal bead to work on. This does work very well, but occasionally results in some contention and overlap from thundering herd, or at least wastes time/tokens/communication in avoiding that before the agents waste time duplicating work. But in this new ntm-oriented workflow, I was able to have the controller agent in the upper left use bv itself and then optimally parcel out the instructions to each agent so that we could know for sure that there's no overlap), I ended up with a ton of new beads for new features, which I had it optimize and polish a few times. Now I can swap to a new Claude Max account and have the swarm implement all those new features! It should only take a couple passes like the one shown in the screen recording to get everything implemented. Then we can rinse and repeat, having the agent read through the full session histories of each agent and its experience from its own session in sending ntm commands and seeing how they worked out in practice, to come up with the next batch of changes to both its ntm vibe coding skill AND to the ntm tool itself. Do you see how rapidly this turns into Skynet? My mistake earlier was in focusing on making myself a "faster horse" as Henry Ford used to joke about customers wanting before he showed them what they should really want (a Model T). That is, something that would make my experience nicer while doing this agent swarm based development workflow. But the obvious lesson is that you should make all your tooling agent-first because the agents are just better at this stuff. You can still watch, and of course I did add a ridiculous number of very nice human-centric features to ntm that you'll be seeing in the next day or two, but those are really kind of "for fun" to make us humans feel better about the process. All the real value-add is happening "by agents, for agents." PS: Towards the end, you can see me switch to my Mac and tell Claude to improve the skill that I made earlier today for taking the mkv screen recording files from OBS Studio and muxing them into MP4 files for sharing, while downloading songs from YouTube to serve as the background music. I made it so it can also grab the thumbnails and generate little song credit cards that show up in the lower right corner. This worked perfectly the first time! I played 4 hours of The Blood of Dawnwalker - and it's damn good. My full thoughts below 👇 The version we played was in beta and running on some powerful PCs. It was from the beginning of the game so I wasn't able to explore the entire map. It felt pretty polished overall and I didn't experience any bugs or performance issues during my time. The game takes place in Vale Sangora - it's a beautiful valley near the Carpathian Mountains full of lush trees, bogs, mines, and all kinds of wildlife and villages and communities roughly comparable in size to The Witcher 3's Blood and Wine but packed with detail. There's a lot of neat history everywhere you look and explore, with references to Genghis Khan's hordes, the Tatars, and more. There are also little details that help make the setting a bit more real. Because Vale Sangora is run by the vampire leaders, silver is forbidden to have in your possession, and not every merchant will buy or sell them. It looks great visually, but I wouldn't say in a way that blew my socks off. Environments look good, trees, bushes etc all swaying in the wind, good lighting, character models are nicely detailed. It's not pushing things on a technical level but I found that perfectly ok. From the beginning of the game, a series of events introduces you to Coen's family - his parents and siblings. His father Pieter is a strong and stern caretaker who knows his way around a sword but deeply cares for his family. Coen's mother Esme is stricken by an illness that the whole family is trying to wrangle with, and his siblings are playful and endearing. As the vampires don't tolerate 'weakness', you start the feel the weight of the family's plight that gives off an aura of despair. At least in these initial hours, I found myself surprisingly growing attached pretty quickly. While there's an ominous metaphorical 'cloud' that hangs over the valley, there are bits of lightheartedness thrown in too. One charming quest saw me play tag with my siblings and go fishing in the old family hangout spot. Character performances and voice acting are excellent. There weren't really any characters that felt out place or miscast. I especially enjoyed the gravelly voices of Pieter and Brencis - the leader of the vampires. Brencis comes off formidable, and events in the game gave me a motivational drive for revenge, which I always like in games. The story is set up in a way that each of the vampire leaders needs to be taken down, with Brencis as the head honcho. You can attack them in any order, even going directly to Brencis from the outset, but you'll probably find you'll have a bit of trouble with that approach. While I've always been a little hesitant about plots that have open-ended structures, the team at Rebel Wolves told me that each vampire 'captain' is unique with many quests tailored to their specific stories, and there was a lot of effort and care put into each. They urge players to play through each storyline to get the most out of the game. There were lots of endearing characters in just the first few hours. Anca - a local herbalist and a witch, reminded me a lot of The Witcher 3's Keira. And she's a romance option. There are other sentient races as well, like the Uriash which I would say resemble something like the Qunari from Dragon Age. They're big, tough and brooding and are seen as monsters and somewhat shunned. There's a nice variety of monsters too, like kobolds who are basically ghouls that talk smack, and I came across the "Great Bog Wurm" in a swampy area which was it's own mini-boss fight. When I compare to something like The Witcher 3 (because many people understandably do with Dawnwalker given how the game looks and the makeup of the Rebel Wolves team), movement and navigation in the game felt fairly fluid overall. Walking, sprinting, vaulting ledges, etc were smooth. There's a bit of clunkiness when it comes to jumping, where I'd sometimes starting sliding jumping down a hill or onto rocks. There's also an ability that Coen automatically gets after he becomes a half-vampire called "Planeshift". It lets him teleport dash around the world so he can reach higher areas or across gaps. It felt a little clunky and imprecise when scaling things like towers and trying to land back on solid ground. There's a glossary/beastiary that's structured just like The Witcher 3, and the soundtrack is basically, you guessed it, The Witcher 3 in all the best ways. And like one of my favorite parts of The Witcher 3, there are plenty of points of interest that lead to unique little narrative beats or quests. One saw me come across a villager searching for his brother. Following that little quest line led me to a buried tomb which led to a boss fight with an ancient warrior and cool loot at the end. One abrupt encounter in the world saw me chase the village asshole talking shit about my family. When his drunkard father catches us arguing, he scolds him more and tells me I should teach him a lesson myself and beat him with a stick. I can choose to partake in it, stand by and watch, or stop the father in a physical altercation. There's been a lot of questions about combat and from what I played, I liked it, moreso than The Witcher 3's. There are two ways to play: directional and traditional. With directional combat, you hold down a shoulder button to block while aiming in whatever direction you see an enemy attacking from. That's either up, down, left or right. It's simpler than something like Kingdom Come and I got used to it real quick. It sometimes got a liiiittle overwhelming when multiple enemies are attacking at the same time - and they do that a lot. Enemies don't wait around for their turn, instead opting to gang up on you to take you down. There's also the traditional or 'standard' combat, which is basically pressing a button that blocks enemies no matter what direction (your standard action game). You can also expectedly parry enemies that open them up for more damage. There is a stamina meter that depletes with blocks, and it depletes faster if you're playing standard, though you can upgrade your stamina as you play too. There are active abilities you can put into quick slots for faster use during combat. As there's a day/night cycle and Coen is a 'dawnwalker' - meaning he's human during the day and a vampire at night, you can switch between your swords in daytime and bring out your claws at night, which are more powerful. There are many abilities, though because I was playing the first hours of the game, I didn't get to see them all. One that I got to use was a powerful charge attack, and another was a flurry of deadly slashes with my claws. You can drain enemies to regain health with 'voracious bite', though enemies won't wait around while you're doing it so you have to be mindful. There are shrines dotted around the map that you can use to fast travel and upgrade your skills. There are tons of resources and items in the world just like The Witcher that you can use to craft potions and the like. Some can only be done during the day or at night. In terms of time progression, there are 8 time 'segments' per day and certain quests and activities can push the time forward a set amount of segments. I thought I would hate it at first, but it actually makes for some compelling choices in how you choose to progress the game. You're always shown when an action will progress time by the way, so nothing will take you by surprise. Running around and exploring the world doesn't push time forward. When your vampiric health drops really low, you become hungry and start to really crave blood. You can even lose control during dialogue and drain the person you're talking to - including friends. I didn't encounter that myself but the devs said those can have lasting effects throughout the game. This has definitely jumped up my most anticipated list for the rest of the year. It's practically The Witcher 3: Medieval Vampire Edition with its own flavor and unique mechanics and honestly...that is something I'm quite happy about. #BloodofDawnwalker

I played 4 hours of The Blood of Dawnwalker - and it's damn good. My full thoughts below 👇 The version we played was in beta and running on some powerful PCs. It was from the beginning of the game so I wasn't able to explore the entire map. It felt pretty polished overall and I didn't experience any bugs or performance issues during my time. The game takes place in Vale Sangora - it's a beautiful valley near the Carpathian Mountains full of lush trees, bogs, mines, and all kinds of wildlife and villages and communities roughly comparable in size to The Witcher 3's Blood and Wine but packed with detail. There's a lot of neat history everywhere you look and explore, with references to Genghis Khan's hordes, the Tatars, and more. There are also little details that help make the setting a bit more real. Because Vale Sangora is run by the vampire leaders, silver is forbidden to have in your possession, and not every merchant will buy or sell them. It looks great visually, but I wouldn't say in a way that blew my socks off. Environments look good, trees, bushes etc all swaying in the wind, good lighting, character models are nicely detailed. It's not pushing things on a technical level but I found that perfectly ok. From the beginning of the game, a series of events introduces you to Coen's family - his parents and siblings. His father Pieter is a strong and stern caretaker who knows his way around a sword but deeply cares for his family. Coen's mother Esme is stricken by an illness that the whole family is trying to wrangle with, and his siblings are playful and endearing. As the vampires don't tolerate 'weakness', you start the feel the weight of the family's plight that gives off an aura of despair. At least in these initial hours, I found myself surprisingly growing attached pretty quickly. While there's an ominous metaphorical 'cloud' that hangs over the valley, there are bits of lightheartedness thrown in too. One charming quest saw me play tag with my siblings and go fishing in the old family hangout spot. Character performances and voice acting are excellent. There weren't really any characters that felt out place or miscast. I especially enjoyed the gravelly voices of Pieter and Brencis - the leader of the vampires. Brencis comes off formidable, and events in the game gave me a motivational drive for revenge, which I always like in games. The story is set up in a way that each of the vampire leaders needs to be taken down, with Brencis as the head honcho. You can attack them in any order, even going directly to Brencis from the outset, but you'll probably find you'll have a bit of trouble with that approach. While I've always been a little hesitant about plots that have open-ended structures, the team at Rebel Wolves told me that each vampire 'captain' is unique with many quests tailored to their specific stories, and there was a lot of effort and care put into each.
