Brad Pitt says he spent a year and half as an extra before landing anything real. Brad Pitt: “I landed in Burbank with $275 left in my name. Found an extras agency in the paper, paid 25 bucks, was in. Within a week I’m doing an industrial video.” Brad Pitt: “I get this gig extra in a restaurant scene with Charlie Sheen, DB Sweeney. I’m supposed to pour champagne. They show me how pour, spin, wipe. I got chosen out of the extras.” Brad Pitt: “The whole game was getting your SAG card, but it’s a catch-22 you can’t get a job without one, and you can’t get one without a job. You needed a line.” Brad Pitt: “So like a jackass, I get to the last actor in the scene, pour her champagne, and go ‘Would you like anything else?’” Brad Pitt: “First AD runs over. ‘You do that again, you’re out of here.’ Shame for the rest of the night.” Dax Shepard: “Favreau has a similar one he was an extra driving a van through the background of a scene in Chicago. Realized there wasn’t enough light for anyone to see him. So he turns on the interior light, drops the visor. Take three, someone finally clocks the extra who lit himself.” Brad Pitt: “We were desperate back then. It’s sweet, honestly.” Brad Pitt: “The rule was five years. If you’re not working by then, go home. I got my card at year four.” One line. One champagne pour. That’s all it took to almost get kicked off set for good.
