And Brexit ‘take back control’ delivered opposite by collapsing the returns system ie Dublin Accord, while also weakening growth and public finances. That’s precisely why many Conservatives are relatively comfortable with continuity Starmer. Electorally, it traps Labour: • owning austerity without Tory voters trusting them on it • owning Brexit without Brexit voters loving them for it • and alienating much of Labour’s own pro-European base at the same time.
