Denzel Washington’s epic monologue towards the end of Training Day was largely improvised on set. Director Antoine Fuqua was so blown away by his performance, he says he thinks he "forgot to yell cut”. He explains… “That’s Denzel. He was just in his zone. I mean, that was one of those moment...people talk about AI. Those are the moments where you go...it's a great tool. It's gonna be a great tool, I think...but the emotion, and the moment that an actor can bring - you can't predict that. That's something that's just inside of Denzel. And when that came out, I was just like - I hope I got it. I just turned to my operator - who was shaking- I looked over at the guy - I was like, “please tell me you got that.” Because that was the take. That was it. There was no other take - I mean, how do you tell an actor like that, that that wasn't good enough? …He walked over to me, and he just had this look in his eyes. I was like, “you good?” He said, “you good?” I said, “Yeah…” Some of that was in the script, but he flipped it the way he did it. "Putting cases on all you." He kind of added some things in there. And then he just went into a whole other zone with the whole King Kong thing- with Pelican Bay - Denzel started that. That was Denzel. That was him, man. He just kind of lit up, and I think I forgot to yell cut. I was just watching it, because everybody started walking away, and I'm just watching him, and then he lights a cigarette - and he's talking - and I'm just watching him. I think at some point he probably looked at me like, you going to cut? And I'm like, “oh yeah, yeah, cut.” He was still in it. That's the thing with Denzel. He was so Alonso…I'm just watching him for a while because I didn't know what else he was going to do. It was just so magical. And then I think he looked up at me and I was like, “Okay, cut, cut.”

I got to talk to Khun Tay, Khun Ju, and Nong Mark quite a lot that day. But I think I was the one who talked the least. Everyone else was chatting away, and it was a lot of fun. I was just sitting there listening most of the time—and laughing most of the time, too. And there was this one person who kept teasing me. He would scoop rice for everyone except me, so I had to fuss a little about it before I finally got some. Or he’d give me some meat, but I wasn’t sure if it had fallen or not. He told me, “No, no, it didn’t fall,” but I was a little suspicious because he doesn’t seem like the type to pick something up and give it to me. But I still ate it because I trusted him. I thought he wouldn’t hurt me. As for Nong Mark, he was really cute that day. I think it was because I was sitting beside him, so I got to talk to him quite a lot. We talked about random stuff, our work, and stuff like that. Nong Mark seemed so much happier, and I was really happy for him. It felt like he was back to being the “young Mark” again. He was so cute, so cheerful. Everyone seemed so cheerful and youthful that day—Khun Tay, Khun Ju, Nong Mark, all of them. They all seemed so much happier. My son’s daily diet is a huge game of trial error but he hasn’t given up on trying new things. This man with ARFID is sharing his food fails as he tries new foods his wife is encouraging him to try. It can be very stressful when trying to make sure they are able to eat, it can be frustrating when it’s fail after fail. The first thing I bribed my kid to try was a goldfish cracker. He wanted a new toy so I came up with the idea that I would give him motivation to eat whole dangling the thing he wants me to buy for him. He wanted some new toy btw but I told him I would buy it if he ate one goldfish cracker. While he still forced himself to eat it I don’t think he likes it because he never asks for it. Many other things he will try and says he likes but refuses to eat more of it, just the one bite. That was how I knew he did not like it. I also learned that just because he didn’t like something didn’t mean he didn’t like that specific item, if I gave him a different version of it he sometimes would eat and like it. For example I make home made Mac n cheese which he won’t eat, but he likes the Kraft Easy Mac cups and can make it himself. He’s not a fan of thick home made burgers but likes McDonald’s cheeseburgers. He will get there eventually, I’m just glad he’s willing to try new things.

🐱what I learned from Sky? I think it’s because I already knew that he’s a very talented actor, so at first I was really nervous. I was worried whether I might upset him or something, because he seemed very experienced while I was like a newcomer 🐱but after working together for a while, it felt like ice breaking. The wall between us slowly started melting away. It started feeling like he’s really my friend 🐱it felt like both of us were trying to approach each other and adjust to each other.
