In the first Austin Powers movie (1997), Dr. Evil initially demands a ransom of $1 million but, after his henchman Number Two points out that this is an insignificant sum, he changes the demand to $100 billion. Then, he travels back to 1969 and holds the world ransom for $100 billion, which the President laughs off because that amount doesn't exist yet. In 1969, $1m was generally considered an amount so large that the US government would begrudgingly pay it to save the world. In 1997, that amount was $100 billion. Today, such an amount would be north of $2 trillion, which would still be a trivial amount for the US, basically a few months of expenditure. What number would theoretically be demanded in 2040? $100 trillion? What comes after a trillion? Dr. Evil gives us the answer in Goldmember: "1 billion, gagillion, fafillion, shabolubalu million illion yillion...yen" They are running out of numbers to use; just like Zimbabwe, they would soon need to start cutting off zeros, because the denominations are getting so large that it's becoming unworkable.
