New video shows the Bondi Beach terrorist Naveed Akram proselytizing (da’wah) in Sydney in 2019. His street dawah took place in Bankstown together with the Street Dawah Movement group. This overlaps exactly with the period when ASIO took interest in him. Australian authorities, including ASIO, began monitoring and investigating Naveed Akram in the summer 2019 due to his close associations with members of a Sydney-based Islamic State (IS) cell. This followed the July 2019 arrest of Isaak El Matari (an IS operative jailed for planning attacks), whom Akram knew closely, along with other convicted cell members. ASIO assessed him for about six months but found insufficient evidence of personal radicalisation or threat at the time, deeming him mainly an acquaintance rather than a core member. Naveed was also follower of the notorious pro-IS preacher Wisam Haddad at the Al Madina Dawah Centre. He also acted as a street preacher for Haddad's associated "Dawah Van" initiative. Counter-terrorism sources link this centre to radical influences, with several associates (including youth recruiter Youssef Uweinat) convicted of terrorism-related offences. The centre has been described in reports as a hub influencing multiple Australian jihadists. Sydney and Melbourne both suffer from a large number of young jihadis and jihadi supporters.
