Very true. Before being granted the Australian citizenship back in 1985, I had to pass a test from the Australian history and the English language. My "adaptability and usability profile" was assessed prior to arriving in Australia, by the Australian Embassy in Vienna, where we applied for emigration. It took one year of verification, medical tests and interviews, before we were accepted and put on the Qantas flight to Sydney in 1982. Landing in Mascot airport was the best day of our lives (the plane trip was pretty rough, I remember 🤣). The sense of gratitude has never left me. Now, I love to listen to my daughter's (born in Liverpool, Sydney) Aussie accent. I miss Australia from the early 80's.
