Transport has officially begun for Timmy, the stranded humpback whale. After weeks trapped in shallow coastal waters along Germany’s Baltic Sea — far from his natural Atlantic home — rescuers have taken the dramatic step of moving the young humpback onto a specially prepared barge. Using heavy-duty straps and a dredged channel, teams carefully lifted and secured the whale onto the flooded vessel. The barge has now set sail toward the North Sea, navigating around the northern tip of Denmark through the Skagerrak strait. This large-scale rescue operation is unprecedented in Germany. So far, Timmy appears to be holding up well: he has been resting calmly during transport and was heard vocalizing overnight, which authorities are taking as a positive sign. However, the ambitious effort has sparked intense debate. Some marine experts worry the whale may already be too weak or ill to survive the long journey, suggesting his stranding was a symptom of underlying distress. Others believe the transport represents his best — and possibly only — chance at survival. Timmy’s ordeal has captured global attention, with live streams, public protests, and heated discussions about whether humans should intervene in such cases. The outcome now hinges on whether the whale can endure the voyage and successfully return to deep ocean waters.
