❗️🎙️ AZ Chike says working around Kendrick Lamar and pgLang fundamentally changed the way he approaches songwriting, down to how long he stays on a subject and how much attention he gives a hook! Chike says one of the biggest challenges while making NO REST FOR THE WICKED was learning to carry a single idea throughout an entire record. He also revealed Kendrick repeatedly pushed him outside his comfort zone by having him sing and develop melodies, something Chike had largely avoided throughout his career! “Dot was really on me about, ‘You got to master the melodies. Like, you got to master these hooks!’” Chike says Kendrick already trusted what he could do with verses, but their sessions became far more detailed once they reached the hooks. That process had him learning Melodyne and experimenting with vocal techniques he previously had little interest in using!

Az Chike went on TT live and said he lost his grandmother at 12 yo ans had to use his Sponge Bob boom box at her funeral and they played “cross roads” by Bone Thugs. He said she would have been his biggest supporter if she was still alive. Also said he was going to be consistent and active and this was the longest he’s ever worked on an album before dropping. Can’t wait to hear this album.
