B-1 vs Tu-160 I might be wrong, but I don’t see long-range bombers today flying over targets and dropping bombs directly anymore, except in completely undefended areas. Strategic Bombers Are More Relevant Than Ever Decades ago, these aircraft had to fly directly over their targets to drop bombs. That era is over, and things have only gotten easier for them. Now they are standoff platforms capable of launching modern, heavy, long-range missiles (thousands of kilometers), including hypersonics, in large quantities, without ever entering contested airspace. This proves they are far from obsolete and have become massive flying weapons platforms. If you want to go further: what navy could survive a squadron salvo from Chinese H-6 or H-20 launching 4–6 anti-ship hypersonic missiles with 1,500–2,000 km range? Strategic bombers are more relevant than ever and now operate much more safely. In the future, in possible larger conflicts, we’ll see waves of 20 bombers launching salvos of 150–250 missiles, overwhelming defenses and causing immense destruction. These platforms provide extended reach at a far lower cost than medium- or long-range ground launched missiles. Not to mention the low operating costs of the B-52, Tu-95, and H-6, with the latter probably having even lower costs. The trend is toward missiles and bombs with ever-greater range, lower cost, and modular designs to be launched from bombers. We can expect these aircraft to remain in service for at least another 20–30 years.

In recent days, I have been reporting that, from what it seems to me, Iran has developed technology for better coating of these missiles, associated with evasion techniques. This image is from one of the attacks on Haifa recorded last night. Due to its robustness, it appears to be a Kheibar, Shahab-3 or Sejjil-2. They are missiles with warheads of 1,500–2,000 kg. As I have been saying, even if Iran launched only 20 per day, it would still be a big problem that would persist for a long time. And the solution to this is not carpet bombing. In Yemen, which is infinitely smaller, that did not solve it.

Today, there are new significant results from our deep strikes. In Russia’s Samara region, one of the key enterprises within Roscosmos – the Progress Center, which was involved, among other things, in electronics production – was hit. Flamingo missiles were used. A good achievement. The distance from our border is about 900 kilometers. Our long-range sanctions also reached the Savasleyka airbase, where the carriers of Russian missiles that strike our cities and villages are based – about 700 kilometers from Ukraine. We also have confirmation of the damage we were aiming to inflict at an oil facility in Ust-Luga – more than 800 kilometers from our border. I am grateful to all the units involved for their accuracy. Our plan of long-range sanctions against Russia for this war is being implemented, and it is important that Russia’s war potential be reduced. Peace is needed, and this must be evident in Russia – through concrete damage to specific facilities. Glory to Ukraine!

A few minutes ago, three TU-95MS strategic bombers, carrying KH-101 type cruise missiles, took off from the Murmansk region airbase in Russia and are heading towards the launch zone. There are also reports that two TU-160 strategic bombers have also taken off. Robert Brovdi, commander of the Ukrainian drone forces, is urging Ukrainians to take shelter.

But modern attacks don’t try to beat these systems head-on. Instead, they use swarms of missiles, drones, and decoys to overwhelm radar and confuse interceptors. Low-flying cruise missiles slip under radar coverage, while electronic warfare jams sensors. In the Russia-Ukraine war, ballistic missiles and drones are used together. This combination makes strikes deadlier, even though Ukraine intercepts up to 90% of drones. In the ongoing Israel-Iran conflict, Israel's multi-layered air defense systems such as the Iron Dome, David's Sling, and Arrow 2/3 have achieved high but not perfect interception rates against Iranian ballistic missiles. The numbers still favor the attacker: defenders may have dozens of interceptors, but attackers can launch hundreds of targets. Air defense gives you better odds, not certainty. On June 1, 1996, the last nuclear missiles were brought from Ukraine into Russia. The next day, Ukraine has lost its status of a nuclear state after signing the Budapest Memorandum. The US, the UK and Russia gave their assurances that Ukrainian security and sovereignty would not be violated. In exchange, Ukraine promised to give up its nuclear arsenal - one-third of the Soviet nuclear arsenal in total. Ukraine held up our end of the bargain. By 1996, all Ukrainian nuclear warheads were transferred to Russia. Some other military equipment - like strategic bomber planes - was simply scrapped; some were transferred to Russia, and, according to recent investigations, they are now used for missile strikes on Ukraine. In 2014, Russia broke its promises by annexing Crimea and invading Donbas. In 2022, Russia launched a full-scale invasion on Ukraine. Russia would not have dared to attack another nuclear state. The Russian aggression today is a direct consequence of the Budapest Memorandum. Today, Ukraine has launched a successful attack on Russia's strategic aviation. Repair work to restore critical infrastructure is ongoing in many regions of Ukraine. In January alone, Russia launched more than 6,000 attack drones against us, around 5,500 guided aerial bombs, and 158 missiles of various types. Virtually all of it targeted the energy sector, the railways, and our infrastructure – everything that sustains normal life. The strikes are continuing now. Over the past week, Russia has used more than 980 attack drones, nearly 1,100 guided aerial bombs, and two missiles against Ukraine. We are recording Russian attempts to destroy logistics and connectivity between cities and communities. That is precisely why the need to protect the sky persists. Missiles for Patriot, NASAMS, F-16s, and other platforms are needed every single day. I thank all partners who understand this and help us.
