Test pilots are engineers too. Cool as a cucumber considering each trial is a "first time" event in a flight-test program. While some aspects might be predicted, there are plenty of surprises! Line pilots like me owe everything to these amazing aviators who write the book I rely on. Respect.

Ho-lee-crap. That test flight crew must have been awarded the "Back of the Envelope Brown Stain" trophy.

Like the original DC-9, the 717 uses a control tab for elevator actuation with a pushover actuator for stall recovery due to the wing shielding the control tab in high AOA situations. It doesn't stall well at all and will drop off on a wing. A minimum of 7,000 ft. lost.

I like how he shifted the transmission into a lower gear for more power.

Filmed on a state of the art potato... Would like to see the altimeter & VSI during this test.

Pre-stall buffet is your friend. Sort of like a wake-up call for the most important meeting of your life.

I worked at the engine manufacturer at that time and reviewed the recorded engine data later together with the nacelle engineer and the airframe engineer. Amazing how much turmoil all involved systems can take, makes me feel relaxed as a passenger during normal operation.

Watch the attitude indicator, almost immediately inverted at the break. Snap barrel roll style inversion.

The increasing in airspeed noise is frightening as it accelerates.

It's worth becoming a pilot just to experience stall training. Going from level flight to inverted, nose down in 1s is a wild feeling.

Basic food deliveries I always tip $5-$6 if it’s 1 or 2 pizzas. If both pizzas cost $100 I’m still only tipping $5 or $6.

I thought high elevators like on the 727, MD11 etc were extremely difficult to recover from stall
