Dogs and sheep have a long-standing relationship, with dogs often being used to herd and manage sheep flocks. This practice, known as sheepdogging or herding, has been a part of human and animal history for thousands of years. Sheepdogs are specifically bred and trained to work with sheep, using their natural instincts to control and direct the flock. The bond between sheepdogs and sheep is based on trust and understanding. Sheepdogs use their body language, barks, and movement to guide the sheep, while the sheep learn to follow the dog's commands. This relationship is beneficial for both the sheep and the sheepdog, as it allows for efficient management of the flock and provides the sheepdog with a sense of purpose and fulfillment. In some cases, sheepdogs may also be used to protect the flock from predators, such as wolves or coyotes. Their presence alone can deter potential threats, and if necessary, they will defend the sheep with their lives. Overall, the relationship between dogs and sheep is one of mutual respect and cooperation, with both species working together to ensure the safety and well-being of the flock.

This is a Great Pyrenees, a relative of Hucks and the protector of the flock. Pound per pound the best protectors on a ranch, nearly every large ranch in MT has a few. They are super lovable, but don’t screw with their sheep, and the sheep know why they are there! Here’s an example of how tough and effective they are.
