1981. Much more reflective and far deeper. Without a doubt, one of the greatest recordings of Bach and Gould

55 is technical precision and prowess, 81 is poetry and learning you can take time to savor it. Both are amazing but if I had to pick one it would be the 81

1981. The aria da capo speaks to me of missed chances and deep regret.

I only discovered GG seriously at his death. The snob host on public radio sneered but grudgingly played the ‘81 Goldbergs. I then listened to them about 5x/week for the next 10 years.

1981. It's like seeing this amazing sculpture and taking the time to walk around it, see it from every angle, and really think about it.

I prefer listening to 55. To me, in 81 he is overthinking it.
