Part 1: I have never zoomed in on their faces in the last KTV moment. Because I would just cry watching that last video. But I decided to do it today and my heart just broke more. The silence between them was sad but their faces and little thing they do? More sad, more heartbreaking. Yueyue looks like he will cry at any moment, the more he looks at his man the more his nose flares up, the more his fingers play with his Adam's apple, the more he tries to look up and blink each time. And Leizi...I can't make out his eyes but I know it's an unblocking stare at his moon in front of him. The more he looks, the more he anxiously bites his lips, the more he takes big gulps, the more his breathing deepens and the more his chest heaves. Now they are married and having a great time in their beijing apartment with their 3 kids but I cannot imagine what this moment felt for them. And I hope they never feel it again. Only warm cuddles and hugs and kisses to one another. (Part 2 will be me zooming in on the last scene where yueyue sings his heart out~ Don't kill me!)

I took my son to our local butcher, well not too local, it’s about 30 minutes away. He’s getting to be at an age where he’s beginning to be extra compassionate. This is him taking my phone for whatever reason since he has his own, and recording the cows. My dilemma is I can’t hide from him anymore what the fate of these specific animals are. I’ve taken him to this butcher/farm off and on for years. He still loves eating his steak and ribs of course because who doesn’t. But now he’s beginning to associate the truth that the cows he goes and pets and befriends will be the same ones in the display counter where he picks out his steaks. Am I wrong for not wanting to clarify and tell him that’s the case, should I just let him find out on his own? He’s already going through puberty now as we speak, he’s been extra hormonal and angry. I don’t know if I want to add another burden for him. I don’t want to tell him the animals he loves are the ones he’s been eating. Part of me wants to just get it over with but a part of me wants to not say anything, I don’t want to speed things up for him too quick. He has no problem buying steaks from grocery stores and such. The problem I’m facing now is that this place that sells meat also is where they raise the cows for slaughter. So the ones we see on the farm will be the same ones weeks from now that we will be eating. I’m not sure what I want to do just yet but I’ll keep you posted.

This dad sold his house and is the last to leave the home where he raised his family. He calls out the names of each of his children one more time as their names echo through the house. Closing a door for the last time on your family’s first house is such a sad feeling. I remember I had moved my family 4 hours away. Yesterday morning did not start out how this family was expecting it to at their ranch. They got an animal alert on their security camera and were surprised to see a dog hanging out by their gate. Their dogs were barking at him, so they put them inside and went back down to investigate. He was curled up in that corner of their fence for nearly an hour when they looked back at the camera footage. They could see he was a puppy and were hoping he'd just wandered from his home. They took him up to their dog ranch to see if they can reunite him with his family. They wait 7 days to see if they can find owners and then they put them up for adoption. I hope I’m wrong but he is about the right age for a Christmas puppy that has now gotten too big. 💔😢 I hate people but what a beautiful boy. ❤️

Yesterday, May 19, I arrived for a visit with Marwan Barghouti — a meeting that had been scheduled more than a month ago. I did not know that it was my parrotlet Sokka’s last day today but it was at least a good one. He was on his playstand and playing in his paper bag fort while I was cooking. He doesn’t get fruit often because of the sugar content but I gave him some mango, to which he replied “om nom nom” in his tiny voice. which I taught him to say years ago when eating. I thought about what kind of fruit cake I could make him for his 10th birthday next month. But lucky for him I was also cooking peppers. Pepper seeds are his favorite thing on the planet and though I usually only give him one pepper’s worth today he got two. He was his normal peppy self most of the day. He had had two suspected seizure/stroke episodes starting exactly a year ago and this looked very much like this. They lasted half an hour and then he was back to being his spunky self again. I consulted the vet both times. I gave him a vitamin supplement the vet prescribed that I thought was working well. She did warn me that they could continue but he seemed to be doing well with the vitamins. I was just about to grab dinner down the street when I noticed he was quiet and standing at his food dish but not eating. Thank goodness I noticed so I could be there for him. I called up the emergency vet and let them know we were coming. Then Sokka got to have one last car ride. Sokka loved the car. He was always well behaved and we did many road trips together Including driving from Texas to Connecticut. On our way to the vet Sokka was very weak and fighting to stay conscious and was resting his head against the back of the carrier. But at one point he used all his strength to move to the front of the carrier so he could watch the sunset with me. I kept telling him “you’re a big bird!” and “he’s so cute!” because those are some of his favorite phrases to say, and during previous episodes he would say it back to me as he was recovering. I was half expecting him to fully recover before we got to the vet as he had done the other two times. But this time he wasn’t getting better and I could tell. We got to the vet and she said I did everything right but was not optimistic. Limiting stress is important with birds especially 1oz ones bc it can worsen their condition so she gave me my options for treatment and one of them was humane euthanasia. I held him in my hands and pet him knowing it could be the last time. I selected the option to see if the vet hospital could do anything for him. But shortly after I started driving he passed on the way to the vet hospital. At least he died doing what he loved, going for a ride in the car. I am relieved I did not have to make the most difficult choice to end his life for him, and that he went quickly and peacefully with a full belly of pepper seeds and mango and during one last sunset car ride. Some people will think “it’s just a bird” but those who know me understand how much he meant to me and how intelligent parrots are. Parrotlets are know for being a big personality in a tiny body. I got him a month after I graduated college and he’s been with me nearly 10 years since so basically my whole adult life. He was a big responsibility (that i don’t recommend to ppl without an exotic avian husbandry background) but I didn’t mind and now I feel a hole where those duties and companionship are no longer. If you actually read all or some of this, thank you, it means a lot to me, really. Going to be spending the next weeks just trying to ground myself and not fuck up my mental health again. I’ll share a separate more happy post about my favorite memories when I’m in the mood. For now here’s my favorite video of him even though he’s not speaking in it, and some baby pics from the first day I met him in 2014 in the comments.

Can any of my friends from the Boomer Generation answer this for me? Why are the Boomers so offended when ask to see their ID? This bank teller was explaining how she goes through this all the time. However when others call it in and pick it up, I can’t verify if it’s actually legit or not, what if somebody stole his card and tried to use it. So, life update that worries me... Didn't sleep well last night. Was too worried if this drunk and drugged-up native was going to come back. My daughter took the garbage out and forgot to lock the door when she came inside. This guy showed up about 10 minutes later, and walked into my house. We were both just in our sleep shirts, relaxing, she in the living room and I was in ny bedroom working on an article Im posting shortly.
