During that warming though, atmospheric CO2 remained almost flat. Fast forward to today, Britain is shown to have warmed about 1.5C since the 1980s--so over a similar time period. Activists insist today's 1.5C of warming must be human-driven. But the historical record shows the climate warmed more, naturally. If CO2 wasn't the driver back then, why must it be the driver now?

Greenland was ice-free 100,000 years ago, when CO2 was at pre-industrial levels. Scientists have known this for decades. Nuuk, the island's capital, hasn't warmed in a century. Since the 1990s, the island has actually been cooling. Back during the Medieval Warm Period, western Greenland was 2C warmer. Natural climate change occurs over long term scales driven by predictable changes in sunlight reaching & absorbed by Earth. Over 10s of thousands of years Earth’s orbit, tilt and wobble cycles back and forth causing an ice age every ~100K years. Orbit: from more circular to more elliptical and back. Tilt: 22° to 24.5° and back. These cycles change the sunlight received/ absorbed. Over the past million years this means Earth cycles in and out of ice ages and interglacials. (Now we are between glacials) A surprising note… the global temperature difference between an ice age and warm period is only ~6°C/ 10°F, but that change takes 10K+ years to happen - until now. Over the past 150 years alone man has warmed Earth by 1.5°C/2.7°F - so about 1/4 of the amount which typically takes nature 10K+ years to accomplish. Any warming appears slow and natural, with the slight modern uptick likely linked to two factors: 1) the urban heat island effect, and 2) Earth's gradual recovery from the Little Ice Age. If carbon dioxide truly controlled the climate, the CET record would shoot upward on the right. It does not.
