The Reconquista Movement Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo (1848): Signed on February 2, 1848, the treaty ceded 55% of Mexico’s territory to the U.S., including modern California, Nevada, Utah, most of Arizona, New Mexico, parts of Colorado, and Wyoming, plus Texas (formalized earlier). The U.S. paid Mexico $15 million (about $560 million in 2025 dollars) and assumed $3.25 million in Mexican debts to American citizens. This payment is sometimes loosely called a “purchase,” though it was more a forced concession after military defeat. Mexican residents in ceded areas could stay and become U.S. citizens or return to Mexico. Most stayed, but many faced discrimination and land loss despite treaty protections. Gadsden Purchase (1853): A smaller follow-up deal, where the U.S. bought a strip of land (now southern Arizona and New Mexico) from Mexico for $10 million to build a railroad. This is a true “purchase” but only involved a small area compared to the 1848 cession. Modern “Reconquista” Movement and the Southwest The term “Reconquista” in this context often refers to a modern, mostly rhetorical movement among some Mexican-American or Chicano activists who view the Southwest as rightfully Mexican, “stolen” through the 1848 treaty.
