Steve Ballmer has a 30-second test that separates good operators from great ones: The former Microsoft CEO uses a simple game in interviews. He's thinking of a number between 1 and 100, and you have to guess it. "I'm thinking of a number between 1 and 100. You can guess. After each guess, I'll tell you whether high or low." Then he lays out the economics. Your first guess pays five dollars, then four, three, two, one, zero. And after that the cash flow reverses and you start paying him: a buck, then two, then three. Every additional move destroys value. "And the question is, do you want to play or not?" When the interviewer jumps straight in to play, Ballmer stops him: "I'm not trying to get you to do it on camera. It's actually quite a hard problem." They run it anyway. The interviewer guesses 50 (too low), 75 (too high), and zeroes in on the number in seven guesses. The outcome? "You owe me a buck." The point was never the guessing. It was the decision before the guessing. Ballmer's read on the interviewer: "I learned that... you need to step back... and really ask whether you should expect to win or lose money on this thing." Run the numbers and the deal is bad: "There are far more numbers on which you lose than numbers on which you win even with your strategy. And number two, I can pick numbers specifically that are hard for you to get." That's the whole lesson in a sentence. The losing outcomes outnumber the winning ones, and the counterparty controls the setup. No amount of in-the-moment cleverness fixes a negative-expected-value bet. The right move is to decline it. Ballmer still remembers the one candidate who saw it instantly. An interview at Purdue: "He said, 'Well, here's the answer.' Wrote it down and said, 'This is the expected value of the game.'" He didn't play. He priced it.

🔥 Fire Cider 🔥 Now is the time to start preparing your remedies so they’ll be ready for cold and flu season! Fire cider is a powerful immune-boosting, digestive-supporting, energy-giving, circulation-stimulating, respiratory-clearing, anti-inflammatory, and antioxidant tonic. Here's my recipe for fire cider using a half-gallon mason jar: Ingredients: - 1 red onion 🧅 - 1 large orange 🍊 - 1 lemon 🍋 - 1 head of garlic 🧄 - 2 ½ jalapeños 🌶 - ½ tsp cayenne pepper 🌶 - 1 tsp peppercorns - 10 cloves - 1 bunch of rosemary 🌿 - 1 bunch of thyme 🌱 - 1 handful of ginger 🫚 - ½ tsp turmeric - 1 or 2 cinnamon sticks - Organic, raw, unfiltered apple cider vinegar (ACV). If you can’t find this, use any apple cider vinegar you have access to. Instructions: 1. Chop your produce and add it to your mason jar as you go. 🍶 2. Add the rosemary, thyme, peppercorns, dried cayenne peppers, cloves, and cinnamon sticks. 3. Fill your jar to the top with ACV. 🍎 4. Place a sheet of parchment paper between the jar and the lid to prevent the ACV from corroding the metal lid. If using a plastic lid, you can skip this step. 5. Let your fire cider sit on the counter or in the pantry for 4-6 weeks, gently shaking it daily. 🕰 6. Open the lid every couple of days to check the level of your ACV. If it’s not filled to the top, add more ACV. 7. After 4-6 weeks, strain the mixture and squeeze all the cider from the produce. 8. Optionally, add honey 🍯, maple syrup 🍁, agave, or your preferred sweetener. You can take a tablespoon each morning 🌞 or use it when you’re feeling under the weather, taking it 2-3 times a day. 🌿💧

Do your little one’s art projects tend to devolve into a messy, muddy jumble of colors? If so, fantastic! That’s exactly the point. This week I’ve been unpacking play schemas - 9 common patterns that young children follow as they discover the world through play. Today’s schema is transforming - which is all about exploring how things change. On first glance, this little one might be making little more than a mess. But he’s actually deeply engrossed in transformation play - exploring how colors mix and change as they are combined. So before you write off paint and other materials as something your child isn’t quite ready to use “properly,” take a step back and consider this: For young children the process IS the product. Exploring how things transform when combined is “a masterpiece” unto itself - with each such experience an opportunity for your child to learn something new about the world. There are steps you can take to mitigate the mess (Crayola makes cool finger paints for bathtub walls that are actually soap, for example)… but sometimes it’s also important to remember that children themselves are washable. And if they don’t come home from preschool occasionally covered in (child-safe, washable) paint - or evidence they’ve explored a mud puddle - you might need to find one better aligned with how young children learn. Just dress them accordingly and chalk it all up to the allure of the transforming schema. This little artist was shared to YT by bodytoss.

Q: Why is company culture important? In the clip below, a16z cofounder Ben Horowitz argues that culture drives how people in your company behave on a daily basis—and particularly, how they behave when you’re not looking. Is that phone call so important I need to return it today or can it wait until tomorrow? Can I ask for a raise before my annual review? Is the quality of this document good enough or should I keep working on it? Do I have to be on time for that meeting? Should I stay at the Four Seasons or the Red Roof Inn? Should I go home at 5 p.m. or 8 p.m.? Should we discuss the color of this new product for five minutes or thirty hours? If I know something is badly broken in the company, should I say something? Whom should I tell? Is winning more important than ethics? None of these things are in your mission statement or OKRs, but they determine many important things for your company, such as how people experience your company, what you’re like to do business with, what your company is like to work at, etc. And as Ben describes, what drives the culture is all of the little behaviors and cues people take on: “this is what I have to do to succeed in this company.” Culture can feel abstract and secondary when you pit it against a concrete result that’s right in front of you, but it’s a strategic investment in the company doing things the right way when you are not looking. It’s the set of assumptions your employees use to resolve the problems they face every day. It’s how they behave when no one is looking. If you don’t methodically set your culture, then two-thirds of it will end up being accidental, and the rest will be a mistake. If you’re looking for a more in-depth guide to culture and how to build a great one, I’d recommend Ben’s book: What You Do Is Who You Are.

People today walk around with the stiffest hips, and the implications are disastrous. You set yourself up for chronic pain and bad posture for the rest of your life. Take control now before it's too late. These 10 stretches will free your hips from their misery: The best time to do these stretches is before bed, as you unload all the tension accumulated throughout the day and achieve a deeper sleep. 1 - Half Frog Stretch (0:06) 3 x 30-60s/side This one is excellent for your inner thighs and hip flexors. You also stretch your abdominals. 2 - Seated Crossed Leg Reach Forward Stretch (0:14) 3 x 30-60s This stretch also hits the lats that sit right above your hips. Some of you may be unable to reach forward with your legs crossed. The first milestone is to touch the floor with your hands and then slide them forward. 3 - Seated Pigeon Stretch (0:23) 3 x 30-60s/leg Today, one of my clients felt a massive pull just by crossing his leg and pushing down. Forget leaning forward! The goal is to bring your chest down to your leg while keeping your back straight. Push your hips back toward the wall behind you to lower your torso. 4 - Seated Glute Strech (0:32) 3 x 30-60s/leg The difference between this stretch and the Seated Pigeon is that you curl your upper back to lower your head to your leg. 5 - Lying Glute Stretch (0:43) 3 x 30-60s/leg Lying on your back with one leg crossed. Pull the other leg toward your chest and hold. 6 - Pigeon Stretch (0:52) 3 x 30-60s/leg This stretch never fails to open my clients' hips, though many will feel enough of a pull by simply crossing one leg. The goal is to reach forward and lower your torso parallel to the floor. 7 - Glute Bridge with External Rotation (1:00) 3 x 10-12/leg This one is great because you strengthen one leg and stretch the other. Due to a lack of strength or mobility, you might have to rotate with a bent leg before moving onto a straightened one. 8 - Frog Stretch (1:05) 3 x 30-60s The frog stretch is amazing for your inner thigh muscles. Start kneeling with your elbows on the floor and your feet pointing outward. Slide backward and hold. 9 - Crossed-Leg Glute Bridge (1:14) 3 x 30-60s/leg Here is another Glute Bridge variation where you strengthen one leg and stretch the other. You feel the hip opening up at the top, so hold it there and rotate your knee away from your body to increase the pull. 10 - V Stretch (1:23) 3 x 30-60s You can do this stretch with your legs up in the air or against a wall. // Start taking care of your hips now before they turn into stone. Reversing the stiffness becomes much more painful and takes much longer if you let it fester over the years. You'll feel much more relaxed and move smoother once you eliminate all the excess pressure.
