One thing I remember well back from the days when I drove truck 35 years ago, many truckers would jump on the radio quick to chastise other truckers for going slow in bad weather “Don’t ya see the mist coming up off the road?!” Etc… If they are still doing that, all younger truckers should know to ignore them entirely. Never let a stranger drive your truck for you. That’s how I was taught anyway and I made my 3 years on the road driving a rig with zero accidents / zero tickets / no warnings / no fines. Once just before Christmas I was rolling out of Detroit Steel up to Steelcase in Grand Rapids on 96. About 9:30pm near Novi, the snow hit. I slowed down and was 35 mph in the right lane with my flashers on. In the blink of an eye the interstate ahead of me (both lanes) was untouched fresh wet snow about 2 inches deep, and behind me was a line of cars as far as I could see. No one even attempting to pass me. I looked up to see a rig in the passing lane and before I knew it, two rigs passed me like I was backing up. Budweiser and Busch Light long haulers. They were pedal down and moving fast. One of them jumped on the radio and with a thick southern drawl he said exactly that “Don’t ya see the mist…” I responded “I’ve lived here all my life hand. You drive your truck and I’ll drive mine”. Further on up the road, just past Don’s Truck Stop (Now Windmill Travel Center I believe) at south west Lansing, there was Busch Light, jack knifed hard all the way down into the wide deep center divide. Budweiser parked with flashers on and triangles out on the right. I did not touch that radio. I just whispered to our Lord “There but by the grace of God go I”. My little PSA for the day.
