The "50 best Afrobeats songs of all time" by billboard does not have "Shako Mo" by Remedies, even though the criteria says "the most FOUNDATIONAL, influential and popular", so how in the world does the all time 50 Afrobeats tracks exclude the song that started the whole genre?! This is what happens when foreign media tell OUR stories for us and back to us. And before you point out that their "staff" who compiled the list are Nigerians, if those staff had compiled the list without the Billboard name, it wouldn't be reposted and applauded as much as it has been since they put it out. Yes, Billboard has contributed to the upward movement and globalisation of Afrobeats over the years with the US Afrobeats Songs Chart, The Billboards Awards showcasing Afrobeats performances at their awards and categories etc, but they completely dropped the ball on this list by not including "Shako Mo", and also "Wetin Dey" by Ruff Rugged & Raw (Paul IK Dairo). These 2 songs created the "fusion" of West African rhythms with Hip-Hop and the use of the "5 Beat Pattern" (the backbone of Afrobeats) respectively. Meeting many of the survivors of the Chooralmala and Mundakkai landslide brought home the immense suffering they are still facing. We discussed each different issue in depth, they requested me to visit the site once more so we went there the next day and took stock, then along with some of their representatives, I met the DC and we went through all pending matters one by one. I am happy that some of the matters are resolvable and with the UDF organisation and the district authorities we should be able to show some progress regarding these in the near future. Others will need more time and policy interventions which I will take up with the concerned ministries and raise in parliament. No effort, no matter how well meaning, can give back what has been lost, but together we can try our best to make life more liveable for those who have borne so much pain.

Two days after the service of Reverend Pinckney, my family worshiped with them to show our solidarity. But my family also needed to be healed. We didn’t even realize how badly. We had just buried my son, Beau, a veteran who was exposed and died because of the burn pits in Iraq for a year. We were in more pain than we knew. We came to offer comfort, but my family received comfort from the congregation of Mother Emanuel. As I listened in the pews, spent time with the families, visited Reverend Pinckney’s office, and visited the memorial for the victims outside, my family and I grew stronger. We prayed together. We grieved together. We found hope together. And now, it reminds me that, through our pain, each of us must find purpose.

An interesting video from this year's Arbaeen pilgrimage demonstrates the rise of popular Shia religiosity in Iraq and its transformation. The video shows the "entrance" (dukhuliyah) of Mulla Muhammad Baqr al-Khaqani, one of Iraq's most popular rawadid (chanters of Shia religious songs), and my personal favorite, into the Imam Hussein Shrine on the day of Arbaeen. The crowd can be seen chanting along the poem titled "The Wounds of the 10th [of Muharram]" (the date of Imam Hussein's killing), word for word, reminding Western viewers of a mass music concert. This diverges from the traditional readings of poems lamenting the death of Imam Hussein, in which the radud (chanter/singer) leads the crowd and they respond (jawab) only specific lyrics, as they don't know the lyrics and never heard the chant before. See for example this classic chant (latmiya) accompanied by slow chest-beating (thaqeel) The style of al-Khaqani's chant/song, along many popular ones by al-Khaqani and other rawadid is "shoor", a fast-paced reading supported by what is essentially beat-boxing, and sometimes also drums and cymbals, as the use of other instruments is not acceptable in Shia religious music in Iraq (it is in Iran, to some extent). This style emerged in Iran in the 1990s and has become highly popular in Iraq as well, and sounds significantly more like modern-day music than the traditional lamentations, which were much slower paced and the chanters often didn't have particularly beautiful voices, and the focus was on the lyrics of the poems. Another source of attraction is that some of the performance of shoor chest/head-beating turn into something akin to a mosh-pit/concert, with participants, who often remove their shirts, reaching physical and religious ecstasy. See for example a performance of part of the abovementioned chant sung by al-Khaqani: Finally, the emergence of Shia satellite channels and the internet allowed for the preservation of chants that would once would only be read and heard once, at a gathering to mourn Imam Hussein (majlis 'azaa). Now many of these poems become viral and the rawadid are treated like celebrities, who are forced to conceal their faces to move around in public. As a result of their beauty, modern sensitivities and new media, Shia religious chants have become immensely popular among Shia communities, often competing with popular music in their number of views and listens, going beyond the audience of observant Shia who deem popular music to be haram. Interestingly, in countries with a sizeable Shia population, such as Lebanon and Iraq, these chants are also enjoyed by non-Shia. The video shows the "entrance" (dukhuliyah) of Mulla Muhammad Baqr al-Khaqani, one of Iraq's most popular rawadid (chanters of Shia religious songs), and my personal favorite, into the Imam Hussein Shrine on the day of Arbaeen. The crowd can be seen chanting along the poem titled "The Wounds of the 10th [of Muharram]" (the date of Imam Hussein's killing), word for word, reminding Western viewers of a mass music concert. This diverges from the traditional readings of poems lamenting the death of Imam Hussein, in which the radud (chanter/singer) leads the crowd and they respond (jawab) only specific lyrics, as they don't know the lyrics and never heard the chant before. See for example this classic chant (latmiya) accompanied by slow chest-beating (thaqeel) The style of al-Khaqani's chant/song, along many popular ones by al-Khaqani and other rawadid is "shoor", a fast-paced reading supported by what is essentially beat-boxing, and sometimes also drums and cymbals, as the use of other instruments is not acceptable in Shia religious music in Iraq (it is in Iran, to some extent). This style emerged in Iran in the 1990s and has become highly popular in Iraq as well, and sounds significantly more like modern-day music than the traditional lamentations, which were much slower paced and the chanters often didn't have particularly beautiful voices, and the focus was on the lyrics of the poems. Another source of attraction is that some of the performance of shoor chest/head-beating turn into something akin to a mosh-pit/concert, with participants, who often remove their shirts, reaching physical and religious ecstasy. See for example a performance of part of the abovementioned chant sung by al-Khaqani: Finally, the emergence of Shia satellite channels and the internet allowed for the preservation of chants that would once would only be read and heard once, at a gathering to mourn Imam Hussein (majlis 'azaa). Now many of these poems become viral and the rawadid are treated like celebrities, who are forced to conceal their faces to move around in public. As a result of their beauty, modern sensitivities and new media, Shia religious chants have become immensely popular among Shia communities, often competing with popular music in their number of views and listens, going beyond the audience of observant Shia who deem popular music to be haram. Interestingly, in countries with a sizeable Shia population, such as Lebanon and Iraq, these chants are also enjoyed by non-Shia. I was going through my piano bench and found "Clair de Lune." After my beloved piano teacher told me she was quitting when I was 13 years old, I begged her to teach me this as our last song, even though it was too advanced for me. She agreed and we worked vigorously on it for our final 8 weeks together. I've played it here and there throughout the years, but it had been a while. Tonight, I opened it up, sat down to play, and smiled as my fingers magically knew their place as if I'd played it just yesterday. It was far from perfect, but brought back so many great memories. I read the notes penciled in by my teacher across the music and could almost hear her voice in my head. Music connects us in beautiful ways. Debussy is one of my favorite composers. Considered a radical for his time, he broke all the rules of composition by using the sustain pedal to let the notes overlap, flowing into one another. In my opinion, "Clair de Lune" (translated as "Moonlight") is one of the most romantic piano songs that exists.

I was going through my piano bench and found "Clair de Lune." After my beloved piano teacher told me she was quitting when I was 13 years old, I begged her to teach me this as our last song, even though it was too advanced for me. She agreed and we worked vigorously on it for our final 8 weeks together. I've played it here and there throughout the years, but it had been a while. Tonight, I opened it up, sat down to play, and smiled as my fingers magically knew their place as if I'd played it just yesterday. It was far from perfect, but brought back so many great memories. I read the notes penciled in by my teacher across the music and could almost hear her voice in my head. Music connects us in beautiful ways. Debussy is one of my favorite composers. Considered a radical for his time, he broke all the rules of composition by using the sustain pedal to let the notes overlap, flowing into one another.
