A few years ago, I took my daughters to see the new Spider-Man in West Jerusalem. The theater was packed with Israeli kids from the neighborhood, their excitement filling the room before the movie even began. As the film played, I noticed something strange. During certain scenes that seemed ordinary to me, the kids around us would burst into laughter or cheer. I couldn’t understand why they were getting so excited. My daughters later explained to me these were subtle callbacks to earlier Spider-Man films. But the kids recognized them instantly; their shared memory made them laugh as one. But that night, in the middle of the movie, swept up in American pop culture, my daughters – and the Israeli kids around them – were suddenly speaking English, as if it was the most natural thing. And in that darkened cinema, I couldn’t tell my daughters apart from the others. Their laughter sounded the same. Their words flowed in the same language. Their joy was identical. For those two hours, the divisions we are taught to see, the differences we are taught to fear – Arab and Jew, Palestinian and Israeli – disappeared. This moment has stayed with me. A few years ago, I took my daughters to see the new Spider-Man in West Jerusalem. The theater was packed with Israeli kids from the neighborhood, their excitement filling the room before the movie even began. As the film played, I noticed something strange. During certain scenes that seemed ordinary to me, the kids around us would burst into laughter or cheer. I couldn’t understand why they were getting so excited. My daughters later explained to me these were subtle callbacks to earlier Spider-Man films. But the kids recognized them instantly; their shared memory made them laugh as one. Then I looked at my own daughters. At home, of course, they speak only in Arabic. But that night, in the middle of the movie, swept up in American pop culture, my daughters – and the Israeli kids around them – were suddenly speaking English, as if it was the most natural thing. And in that darkened cinema, I couldn’t tell my daughters apart from the others. Their laughter sounded the same. Their words flowed in the same language. Their joy was identical. For those two hours, the divisions we are taught to see, the differences we are taught to fear – Arab and Jew, Palestinian and Israeli – disappeared. This moment has stayed with me. I realized how quickly children adapt, how easily they find common rhythm. Maybe the divisions we cling to as adults are less natural than we think.

Watched a new Russian family flick with my son, (Не)искусственный интеллект, about 17 yo Zhenya operating an AI exoskeleton that the Russian MoD is trying to sell to Chinese partners A Russian general tries to show off and fires at him; the robot with Zhenya inside goes rogue, and they end up in Kostroma. The MoD general, a clear villain(!), is trying to hunt them down as the robot-boy duo try to march back to Moscow Along the way, they stumble upon a kids' summer camp that nefarious mafiosos are trying to buy/steal against the owner's will & even kidnap the owner's daughter. Zhenya and the robot help the kids, while the MoD tracks them, aiming to fry the robot's brains to mend the general's ego. Sigma Boy blaring in the background Solid kids' movie for its modest budget, with a surprising, subtle allegory of the (Zhenya) Prigozhin march against the MoD. Shocking and absolutely disappointing. The Mamata Police can't just mend their ways. Even after the RG Kar and the recent Joynagar incidents, they are reluctant to register cases under appropriate sections of sexual crimes. Yesterday a 9 year old Girl child went missing, who was visiting her maternal grand parents home at Rail Colony under the Farakka Police Station area in Murshidabad district. She went out to play with a few kids. When she didn't return home, her parents went searching for her along with the neighbors. Upon enquiring in the neighborhood, it was found that the girl child was lured by one Dinu Haldar, who took her home offering candy or toy. When the search party reached his home, he initially denied every thing, but upon searching his home, the dead body of the poor girl child was found in a sack. Clothes were stuffed inside her mouth. When her parents went to the Farakka Police Station, the Police as usual tried to bury the matter initially and simply refused to register the case as sexual crime and Murder. They kept the parents waiting for long. They even refused to register the case under POCSO Act. Nilotpal Mishra; Inspector of Police; Farakka Police Station was extremely rude towards the poor family. He kept on threatening them trying to make them toe his line. But the unfortunate parents were very perseverant and the local people also held massive protests outside the Police Station. Ultimately the Police caved in and agreed to register the case as sexual offense and Murder. Why is Mamata Police reluctant to register cases involving Sexual Crimes? Is this a strategy to lower crime rates of the State in the NCRB Data? Pressurizing the Victim's Family who are in great pain is the most horrendous crime. Nilotpal Mishra; Inspector of Police; Farakka Police Station should be suspended immediately.
