Trump has until April 30 to resolve this issue in Iran, or he will have to ask Congress for a declaration of war, or an “Authorization for Use of Military Force” (AUMF) to keep going. If he doesn’t get it, he has to pull out. He can continue bombing to protect troops while he pulls out (up to 60 days) but everything has to end before then. Congress is unlikely to declare war on Iran, and still unlikely to authorize an Authorization for Use of Military Force (AUMF) going into a Midterm election cycle. That would be political suicide to the Republicans and a goldmine for the Democrats. So Trump is up against the clock, and his two-week ceasefire just fell apart. I will soon be writing my Republican US congressman and senators, instructing them to oppose any declaration of war or AUMF. I invite you to join me in doing this as Pope Leo XIV explicitly instructed us to do.
