The leader of the National Institutes of Health told a Senate committee Tuesday that he has not seen a study “that suggests any single vaccine causes autism.” Scientific consensus, based on repeated study, is that vaccines do not cause autism. However, Health and Human Services Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr., a former anti-vaccine activist, has repeatedly expressed views questioning the effectiveness of vaccines and raised unfounded concerns about vaccines and autism. In November, a Centers for Disease Control and Prevention website was changed to say that “'Vaccines do not cause autism' is not an evidence-based claim." On 19 November 2025 the US Center for Disease Control updated its "Autism and Vaccines" webpage to state:- "The claim 'vaccines do not cause autism' is not an evidence-based claim because studies have not ruled out the possibility that infant vaccines cause autism." Bill Cassidy just lost the Louisiana Republican Senate primary and finished dead last. He was the single vote standing between Robert Kennedy Jr. and the committee, and he used that leverage to extract a concession: Kennedy agreed not to remove the CDC's "vaccines don't cause autism" slogan from the agency's website. Kennedy's response was to add a disclaimer beneath it stating that the claim is not a scientific statement. Cassidy is now gone. The man who forced that agreement onto the incoming HHS Secretary, using his committee seat as a bargaining chip to protect a slogan the CDC itself could not defend as science, lost in his own party's primary.
