close enough to my idea haha, been doing smth similar years ago but adding some fractal noise animation to add more of a smokey look might try this again lol

u could potentially stack this by duplicating the layer and bunch of times and adjusting the scale and offset to add small varitations then instead of using a alpha matte u could add varing luma to the layers, pre comp them and luma matte the comp so the smaler waves cary less
