Old tubs are cast iron. You strip and refinish them. Otherwise you end up with a garbage fiberglass one that cracks and is useless. Plus waste reduction is a thing

It's a high quality cast iron tub with an enamel coating that's being refinished. They don't make them this well anymore so it's worth restoring.

Ugh I hate seeing painted bathtubs, it pisses me off. As someone that paints on the side, I really hate when landlords say paint everything because they mean everything. I always refuse to do bathtubs because wtf no. 👎

Because the tub has a flange behind the shower tile and you’d have to tear that up to get it out, the redo the drain and plumbing and pay to get rid of tub, then pay for new tub then pay for new drainage accessories which can be spendy if not compatible and you have slab on grade

Because replacing it is significantly more expensive than resurfacing it. You'd have to retile everything. God luck finding matching tile, so it's all gotta come out and get redone too. There's an extra $5,000 for your new tub. OR: $700 to resurface your existing tub. Less if you do it yourself.

Plumber here - Cost to replace would far outweigh the cost to paint it.. To pull the bath out, you have to remove the hob wall to remove the waste and to be able to get the baths return lip out.. then after replacing just the tub you have to get the appropriate trade in to replace the hob wall, waterproof it, retile it etc.. Just on a time basis alone repainting it might take a few hours and replacing it could take a couple of days…

Well, if you’ve ever worked on an old house? It starts with just replacing the tub…. Or the toilet….. or the sink. That’s where the rabbit hole begins. Next thing you know you have an all new updated bathroom and a 20 grand bill😬😳

Because cast iron tubs are easy better than any of that cheap new fiberglass or plastic stuff. Plus why waste something perfectly good. This is tub enamel, and not any old paint.

If the only issue with it is the finish, why replace the whole unit? It still holds water. Just make it look new.

It's an art actually.

I do a few of these except I take the overflow and drain out for a seamless finish. It's not "cheap" but is cheaper than to tear one out and replace with a cheaply made "modern" tub. These cast iron tubs are worth fixing. We do the tile surround too. It makes everything look brand new.

If you have an actual cast iron tub and want to keep it, refinishing is around the same price as a replacement fiberglass tub, and half or less than the price of replacing it with a new cast iron tub.

Cost effectiveness. It's expensive AF. I used to demo out bathrooms just like that on a daily basis. I had to haul them metal tubs down on a flight of stairs, into a trailer then into the dumpster. Along with all the tile and metal lath from around it. Lots of work involved.

It’s mostly about cost and speed. Repainting is faster, cheaper, and gets places rentable again without ripping everything out.

Probably cast iron, hard to remove and better than a molded acrylic or fibreglass tub.

In my first place I had the tub didn’t fit through the door. It was built in before the walls were finished. Plus built into the tile wall, plus cat iron that’s almost impossible to lift. Good luck getting that thing out without it costing a fortune to fix after!
