A question I often ask ballplayers: What is the most important time during a game? Answers I often get are the beginning of the game, the last few innings of the game, or any big moment in the game. All good answers, but all wrong answers. THE MOST important time of the game is the time in between pitches. Ballplayers should be looking to win this time by being in complete control of their breath, self-talk, and focus. As the great Ken Ravizza would often say, “You have to control yourself so that you can control your performance.” Well, when you control and WIN the time in between pitches, you drastically increase your odds for success, especially if your competition isn’t doing that. So, the next time you step on the field, be on purpose with what you do in between pitches. Your results will no longer happen by accident…they will happen by intention. *The same applies to the time in between shots, plays, etc., based on whatever sport you play.
