Self Attention by hand ✍️ ~ 9 steps walkthrough below Self-attention is what enables LLMs to understand context. How does it work? So I drew and calculated one entirely by hand. Goal: turn four 6D features into four 3D attention weighted features, filling in every cell yourself. = 1. Given = Four feature vectors, six dimensions each, one per position. = 2. Query, key, value = Let us multiply the features by WQ, WK and WV. Queries, keys and values all come out of the same four features, and that is what the word "self" is doing in self-attention. = 3. Prepare for MatMul = We copy the queries across the top and the transposed keys down the side. Lining the two up is half the work. = 4. MatMul = Let us multiply K transpose by Q. Every cell is the dot product of one key with one query, which we use as a matching score. That works because the dot product is the numerator of cosine similarity: it is how alike two vectors are, before anyone divides by their lengths. = 5. Scale = We divide by the square root of dk, the dimension of a key vector, here 3. Without it the scores grow with the dimension and a 64-wide head would swamp the softmax. To keep the page doable in pen, the drawing approximates dividing by root 3 with halving. = 6. e to the power = Let us raise e to the power of each score. This is the first half of softmax, and the drawing uses 3 in place of e, which is close enough to do in your head. = 7. Sum = We add up each column: 16, 6, 7 and 12. = 8. Normalize = Let us divide every cell by its column sum. That gives the attention weight matrix in yellow, and each of its four columns is now a probability distribution over the four positions. The decimals are nudged as they are rounded, so every column still sums to exactly 1. = 9. MatMul = We multiply the value vectors by those weights. Each output is a blend of all four values, mixed in the proportion the attention matrix just decided, and it goes to the position-wise feed forward network in the next layer: the FFN box at the bottom of the page. The outputs: Attention weights (A), by column = [.2, .6, 0, .2], [.2, .4, .2, .2], [.4, .2, 0, .4], [.1, .7, .1, .1] Attention weighted features (Z) = [8, 2, 6], [8, 4, 4], [16, 4, 2], [4, 2, 7] The takeaway: attention is a weighted average, and everything before step 9 exists to decide the weights. Then people start cutting back, demanding higher pay, or simply going without. Ask yourself this… If employers can fill vacancies with people willing to work for lower wages, what does that do to the bargaining power of existing workers? 2. High prices eventually solve high prices. Not because politicians step in. Because consumers do. When enough people refuse to pay the asking price, demand falls. People buy less. They switch to cheaper alternatives. Or they stop buying altogether. Businesses then have two choices: lower prices if they still can, or if they can’t make a profit, close their doors. 3. Not all inflation hurts equally. You can postpone buying a new phone. You can’t postpone paying your mortgage. You can skip a holiday. You can’t stop buying food or paying your electricity bill. Inflation in luxury goods is annoying. Inflation in essentials changes lives. If inflation continues, expect more pressure on household budgets, more businesses struggling, and some jobs disappearing as people cut back on spending. My advice? Don’t wait until you’re forced to make changes. Pay down expensive debt if you can. Build some savings. Review your spending now, not when circumstances do it for you. The people who usually cope best aren’t the ones hoping everything goes back to normal. They’re the ones who prepare before everyone else realises they need. Hope isn’t a financial strategy. Professor Sani Lawan Malumfashi Has this to say to all average Nigerians (sic: those outside the corridor of power where stealing happens): As a Nigerian, you should know that you are on your own. You're your own caretaker. Do not for once think that the govt cares. This simple if you consider that you literally provide everything for yourself: you drill your borehole if you want water. You provide yourself electricity by installing solsr systems or generators. If you want good health care, you go to private hospital and pay. If you want good education for your wards, you take them to private schools as well. Yet, you pay taxes. You literally benefit nothing from the govt. Instead, it is the govt that benefits from you. We fund the govt and the officials with our taxes. Therefore, under this hardship of life, as a Nigerian, this is what I suggest you do: 1. Be your own caretaker. 2. Anything that's not a necessity in life, let it slide. The time for excessive spending & enjoyment has been snatched away. This is a time of survival. If you are a fleet of cars, reduce them to one. The number of air conditioners in your house, reduce them or put them off, on your fan. Shawarma, chocolates, ice creams the kids consume, reduce them. Tap the kids on their shoulders. Tell them the reality of today. English breakfast might not be affordable anymore, return to the traditional ones you can afford. If you have beef for protein in your meal fine, if not, add some beans into the soup. It is another source of protein. (Sic: because egg isn't for average civil servants now). 3. Your health is the most important thing you have. Try as much as you can to avoid going to the hospital. Work hard for your health and pray for good health. The hospitals are in terrible state. You might go with headache and return home with an infection or bigger sickness. As a Nigerian, you're your president. You are your teacher. You are your governor. You're your local govt chairman. You're your security. You're all on your own. Forget anything and focus on your well-being. Own your own life. Again, avoid anything that will put you at loggerheads with the govt. Because if you do, the moment the power decides to kidnap you (arrest you); remember your family depend on you to feed. When you're away, you're only putting them in a more serious situation. Anyone who is stepping out of their homes should do so prepared. Prepare for the unimaginable. Anything can happen to you. Rely more on God. Present to Him your problems. (Sic: report every wicked leader to God. Only Him can deal with the situation).

My rejoinder: 1) India’s Muslim population is 14% but according to you it is 18%. Wow! Considering your entire political career started off as a psephologist, that gargantuan 4% difference that you glossed over is professional sacrilege. Psephologists are rated on their exactitude. You fail the test. There is no margin of error, Mr Kishor when you are indulging in a serious conversation post a historic election that has reduced an authoritarian government to its knees. 2) Your attempt to diminish Congress party’s impressive 23% aggregate vote-share in the 2024 elections has again got a luminous distortion. Again, it is elementary, Mr Watson. The rise in Congress vote-share by nearly 3-4% is staggering, because it fought in only 328 seats compared to 464 in 2014 where it got 19.4% vote-share. Why did you not tell that to BBC News? Why would you make such a brazen omission? 3) Your statement that Congress has a “ free vote-bank of 20% minorities votes” is so preposterous that it could qualify for the Oscars in Exaggerated Falsehoods. Muslims vote for regional parties too in bulk; the perfect case being UP and Bihar, among others. The Sikhs vote for different political parties including the BJP. ( An Open Letter) Dear Prashant Prashant Kishor Either you have got your basic facts completely wrong, or you are blatantly misleading the people of India ( reference your-enclosed interview to BBC News). My rejoinder: 1) India’s Muslim population is 14% but according to you it is 18%. Wow! Considering your entire political career started off as a psephologist, that gargantuan 4% difference that you glossed over is professional sacrilege. Psephologists are rated on their exactitude. You fail the test. There is no margin of error, Mr Kishor when you are indulging in a serious conversation post a historic election that has reduced an authoritarian government to its knees. 2) Your attempt to diminish Congress party’s impressive 23% aggregate vote-share in the 2024 elections has again got a luminous distortion.
