All of the political parties represented on the panel - including Reform UK - were informed about the former asylum seekers’ participation on Wednesday, the day before the show. It is entirely sensible to have the opinions and experiences of people who arrived by small boat represented in a debate about immigration - just as it was to have the voices of those who want to see a significant reduction in immigration, including Reform's Zia Yusuf, even though he's been on more times than any other non-politician in 2025. Both arrived in the UK via small boats—one from Afghanistan; the other from Iran. Under international law (specifically the 1951 Refugee Convention, to which the UK is a signatory), refugee status is granted to those who meet the criteria for asylum, meaning they fled persecution or serious harm in their home countries. They are no longer classified as asylum seekers (those awaiting a decision) but as recognized refugees. This distinction is key: while their initial entry was irregular (crossing the Channel in small boats), successful asylum outcomes retroactively validate their claims, shifting their status from irregular migrants to protected refugees. The BBC rightly defended it as representing diverse voices on a topical issue.
