Bears TE Colston Loveland talks about his connection with QB Caleb Williams and how it grew throughout his rookie season: “It was definitely a long time coming. I wasn’t able to get with him in the summer. After practices, really starting Week 4, we hit every route we needed to hit. If we missed it in practice, we hit it. If we didn’t even get the rep in practice, we hit it.” Year 1 of this connection grew into something special. Can’t wait for Year 2. 🍿 🎥: The Athletic Football Show

Brock Purdy on George Kittle returning from his Achilles injury so quickly: “All I know is that he went hard. He did everything he could to get back for Week 1. That’s a credit to him. That’s actually remarkable to be able to have that kind of injury and do what he did to get back. He flew places. He did everything the right way. He just worked his tail off every day in the weight room from when we were back in California at OTAs, the summer in Tennessee and then back during camp. Big credit to him for doing that and doing it for the team. He wanted to get back to play with the boys and to give this organization everything he’s got.”

P.J. Washington on why he believes the Mavericks can turn things around next year: “We get a good pick, we get Kyrie back, we get Dereck back. Start to build a really great team. So, gonna get a lot better this summer, guys will be healthy, guys will be working together, so, I think it’s gonna be really good for us to get some time off and then some time to work together, and just see how we look next year. I think, like I said, the future is bright, so for us, it’s just coming in and be healthy.”

Payton Talbott is excited to finally get the Deiveson Figueiredo matchup after talks throughout much of the year: “We were in talks with this for the better part of the year, and he ended up fighting Song earlier when I thought we were gonna get booked. I’m happy that I got this matchup. I just wanted to fight, it didn’t really matter who, honestly. I’m glad he was a former champ. He’s got a lot of experience, and I’m sure he’ll be crafty on Saturday night, so I’m looking forward to the challenge he brings.”

Darko on what Gradey Dick needs to do to re-enter the rotation: “Gradey Dick is a very talented young player. He was a big part of the rotation at the start of the season.” “One thing we know about Gradey is that he’s going to put the work in. I had a great conversation with him yesterday.” “He needs to be able to learn from that experience, and he needs to come back and be ready to contribute next year. That means on both ends of the floor.” “Defensively, he needs to make a big step there. He needs to be more consistent of a shooter.” “We know he’s going to put the work in. We believe in him, and I think he’s going to be just fine coming out of this summer.” On why he decided to go with Jamison Battle and AJ Lawson over Gradey Dick in the playoffs: “Jamison Battle showed us over the course of this season that he changed the course of some of the games with his shooting. “AJ Lawson, I think, was one of the best players this past season in the G League, in guarding the ball, and we used him in those moments when we really needed extremely high pressure on the ball.” “I think he did a great job there in Game 6. He really helped us get a stop against Dennis Schröder in the full-court, coming up with a steal that ended up helping us win the game.”

Chicago Bears: The Deep Ball Façade As a Chicago Bears truther, I gotta keep it 💯 There are many Bears fans posting “Amazing” out of the pocket deep ball highlights of Caleb Williams Obviously, we don’t see those kinds of throws everyday. It’s insane!! But deep ball playmaking isn’t new to Chicago. Nor is it the focal point of Ben Johnson’s offense. If the Bears are going to be great, we have to become more efficient from the pocket. Pass percentage must go up, time in pocket must come down. Living outside the pocket will hinder our ability to be efficient and to win a Super Bowl #1 Deep Ball was always there Justin Fields in 2023 had one of the most efficient deep balls in the league. Not only that, the majority of his deep balls came from the pocket which is what you want from your QB. As good as the Bears were as a whole last year, the deep ball was far more efficient in 2023. But living on the deep ball and living out the pocket comes with limitations. We have to focus on the fundamentals #2 Ben Johnson is the catalyst Similar to 2023, Bears offense in 2024 had explosive plays followed by inconsistent offense and inept situational football by the head coach Poor offensive line, poor offensive scheme, and inept head coach were the core issues. Ryan Poles thought QB was the main issue and then 2024 happened. We learned quick that it takes more than a talented QB to win football games. Ben Johnson has alleviated all of those concerns. He has made Bears offensive line the focal point! His scheme has been top of the league since he became OC in Detroit. And his situational football awareness far superior than Eberflus. Bears fans must recognize that Ben Johnson is the catalyst of the Bears offensive turnaround, and team success. Now give him what he needs! He wants 3 tight ends? Give it to him He wants more Luther Burden? Give it to him He wants more efficiency out of his QB? Let’s make that the focal point.. #3 Ben Johnson needs a point guard at QB Efficiency in the pocket, time to throw, and passing EPA are far more important to Ben Johnson’s offense than out of pocket deep balls. We need Caleb to be that killer still, but it’s the fundamentals that will allow Bears to take the next step. This offense doesn’t need a Michael Jordan at QB. Ben Johnson would much rather have an Isiah Thomas at QB because this offense has enough Bad Boys to get the job done. Feed the WRs! Get the ball out of your hands quicker! Allow deep ball to be the counter punch of the offense. #4 It’s all there.. The pre-snap awareness, post snap awareness, efficiency from pocket, and pass velocity all scream franchise QB. When you look at Caleb Williams in the pocket on short to intermediate passes, it looks effortless. The ball leaves his hand lightning quick, it’s placed where it’s supposed to be, and WR is able to make a play after the catch. We have to see more of this and it starts now. CW has to trust Ben Johnson’s offense and his WRs more. Conclusion: If we wanted a QB to scramble and throw deep balls, Justin Fields would still be a Chicago Bear What makes Caleb unique, is that he can be a hunter down the field but also has the upside to be a Drew Brees type of QB in the pocket. I rather see more clips of Caleb playing in rhythm and in the pocket , than deep bombs out the pocket. There will be struggles, but that’s ok. I much rather see our QB struggle making the right throws in OTAs than masking it with his gift as an out the pocket thrower.

Kawhi Leonard on his understanding of what the Clippers front office is doing: “Just trying to get younger. We came in the year with the oldest team. It makes sense for them to try to get some assets and try to build for the future. It’s a big class coming in 2027, hopefully. They gotta do what’s best for them…. I thought we were tracking well the last six weeks. Everybody has human nature. It’s a complete turnaround from what I thought we could potentially do. Not saying we were contenders, but we thought we could make some noise or mess someone’s season up. Now the tides changed. We’ll get back into it, hopefully after All-Star.” Does he want to be here longterm? “Yeah, I mean right now I’m not thinking of anything else but trying to finish this season off. And that’s the main goal.”

🚨 BREAKING: Sec. Marco Rubio DROPS THE MIC and WALKS AWAY from the fake news in an epic moment "If we don't hit them now, a year from now, a year and a half from now, no one will be able to touch them, and they'll be able to do whatever they want." "And he made a decision to go, and he made a decision to go in a joint operation because it gave us the highest chance of success, and he made the decision to go first because he concluded that we were NOT going to get hit first." "We were NOT going to absorb a blow from them. We were going to go first." "He was NOT going to run the risk that they could attack us before we could hit them, because in addition to costing lives, it would undermine the effectiveness of our operation." Marco is an effective messenger. Boom.

Steph Curry on projecting what’s possible for the Warriors next season: “I said at the end of the year we always talk championships because that’s the standard that we have. It’s still in the back of your mind as why you work hard every year to prepare yourself to play at the highest level. But I’m just looking forward to training camp and getting back to work because you got to start from scratch.” (via NBC Sports Bay Area & CA with Monte Poole)

Joe Mazzulla went long on awards & recognition today. Asked him about whether he thinks the Coach of the Year award should instead be Organization of the Year: “If it were Staff of the Year, it's different, if it were Organization of the Year – but at the end of the day, I haven't made one basket all year. Our staff hasn't made a basket. We haven't gotten a block. We haven't ran back on defense. We didn't play in a back-to-back. We didn't have to play hurt. We haven't really done shit. So, if you don't have the guys to be able to put you in position, it doesn't really matter. I’m just grateful – the greatest gift I have is I get to coach a bunch of guys that care about winning and being a part of the culture that we have.”

Leafs GM Brad Treliving says the team will put a plan in place as the season comes to an end to bounce back next year and that there are certainly some changes that will need to be made: 👀 “Those are things that as we go forward, we’ve got a plan to put in place. We’ve underperformed this year, and as I said at the trade deadline, there are certainly some changes we need to make. That’s all part of the plan we’re going to formulate moving forward to get this team back to where we think it’s capable of being. Those questions will be answered, and we’ll look forward to letting everybody know what our plans are as we get closer to the end of the season.” Via TSN ( #leafsforever

When you hear the advice "hire the best," this is what that looks like: "We had a candidate who came and interviewed. He was a junior at MIT and very very young. We gave him our interview and he did way better than almost any of the full-time candidates that we had ever talked to. So we said to him, what do you think about taking some time off of school and working with us and building out Devin? And he thought about it for a while, and he came back, and he said I'm down, I want to do it, but my parents really want me to graduate from school, and I'm just not sure there's a way to make it work. So we talked with him more to fully understand the situation, and then we flew to North Carolina, went straight from the airport to his parents' house, had dinner with him and his parents, and tried to understand, all right, what would it take to make this work? They said it sounds like a great opportunity, but we really want our son to be able to graduate. So we figured out a setup where he could work for us essentially full time, but then come in for his required classes, and do what he needed to do to get the diploma. More than that, we got to a point where everyone was happy Then we went straight back to the airport and flew home." – Scott Wu, CEO and co-founder of @cognition, makers of Devin
