Beatrice Straight won the Oscar for Best Supporting Actress for NETWORK mostly for this scene. With just over five minutes of screen time as Louise Schumacher, she set a record for the shortest performance to win an acting Oscar.

Network is a masterpiece. While I find the romance subplot a bit of a drag, the main Beale storyline is genius and still relevant 50 years later.

Network is the type of amazing film that Hollywood wouldn’t know how to make today if it was staring them in the face.

But she's bloody amazing in Poltergeist and everything she's been in.. some actors can just steal scenes in literally seconds and minutes

I mean, she killed it. (The obvious re-dubbing at the 1:30 mark always makes me chuckle.)

She's mad as hell, and she's not going to take it anymore.

Piper Laurie should have a won the Oscar.

She is more than great,,, but I think this Oscar should have been to Piper Laurie

The Oscar should have gone to Piper Laurie for Carrie, but I will give Beatrice Straight this much, she acts the hell out of that scene.

The sort of movie you just don't see anymore sadly , with an an unbeatable cast !

Was she in Poltergeist too?

One of the biggest upsets EVER. She beat both Jodie Foster in Taxi Driver and Piper Laurie in Carrie, which CRUSHED ME. 😖

I loved her in Poltergeist

It's such a pitch-perfect movie. One of my all-time favorites. Brilliant. Intelligent.

Ned Beatty was also nominated and should have won for his one short scene in that movie. He always told young actors that no role is too small.

Should have gone to Piper Laurie? Can't remember who else was up for it?

The scene did give me chills, which is more than I can say for any of Jamie Lee Curtis' scenes in Everything Everywhere...

To be true, great scene

I did a set of notes on FIND ME GUILTY where I suggested the two scenes between lead and his ex should be expanded to three to show evolution. Sidney Lumet's rewrite nailed it in one. I saw that and smacked my head. Similar dynamic/function to what he famously did in Network.

Was this one of those “Lifetime Achievement” Oscar wins? Watching the movie for the first time last week, I can say that of the two short roles that got nominated for Supporting in that movie, only Ned Beatty’s deserved to win.

Incredible drama

She was great in the scene.

thats a joke, she shouldnt have been allowed to win for 5 min, like give me a break

A superb film. One of my Father's favourite films. I grew up watching it always. Excellent performance's from all actors involved.

This is a perfect movie. Perfectly written, directed and acted. Not an ounce of fat.

What doing scenes like that do to an actor? How bad is the hangover?

Never heard of her before now.

Fantastic movie!

And it's an amazing performance. I personally think though that Piper Laurie should have won for Carrie instead.

Now there's a woman worth loving. Hold onto her.

It wasn't that good. Network is so over-the-top and annoying.

Amazing performance gleaned from her real life.
