@udacity That sounds like a very useful course, the book by Donald A Norman is actually where I learned most of this information, it's a great read for Designers of all types.

I can totally recommend this game too. So much fun to play and teaches you a lot about how the system works, albeit in a cartoon like world with fictional names for programming and modules.

I love when games will mess with you by changing the expected outcome of a signifier for a narrative beat, like that moment in TLOU when Ellie doesn't respond to the prompt because she's upset and needs to talk

The single most important thing in a game is design. You can have the best story, music, art and have a game that is technically amazing and runs at a perfect 120FPS without a dip however if the design of a game is flawed it brings the whole game down. Barely any reviews I have watched of Metroid Prime 4 have spoken specifically about its level design (most reviewers dont talk about level design at all in any games.) Prime 4's level design consists of basically elevators, hallways and a big empty desert which don't interconnect at all. Increasingly I am seeing more and more in AAA games, an emphasis on story, art and engineering at the expense of design when design should be the first thing that is nailed! Mike Wikan the Senior Designer On The Metroid Prime Trilogy (he wasnt around on Prime 4) makes a good point here.

I interviewed Don Norman in an honest conversation (that has now gone viral). It's a fallacy that designers only need to focus on design; business knowledge is too important. Don discussed with me: Design education needs to change to focus on broader skills and design thinking, they often lack the understanding of how the world works and are only trained with an art basis. Understanding business operations and economics is crucial for making a difference in the world. What are your 2c on this?
